K-STATE AT SALINA TO HELP CELEBRATE CHEROKEE CULTURE
SALINA -- Kansas State University at Salina will be represented at the 56th annual Cherokee National Holiday Saturday, Aug. 30, in Tahlequah, Okla., capital of the Cherokee Nation.
This is the second year that K-State at Salina has participated in Cherokee National Holiday festivities. In 2007 representatives of K-State at Salina teamed with Cherokee Nation Human Services to construct a float, taking second place in the annual float competition.
The theme of this year's event is "Planting the Seed Corn for Our Children's Future."
"In keeping with the theme we are staging an educational development float, from the planting of the seed corn through the growth and harvesting of education seed corn," said Leslie Hannah, assistant dean of academics at K-State at Salina.
In addition to the parade, K-State at Salina representatives will attend the National Holiday Powwow, the state of the Cherokee Nation address and visit two local high schools to provide information on programs at K-State at Salina to interested students.
