K-STATE'S HOUSING AND DINING SERVICES RECEIVES SEVERAL HONORS AT NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY FOOD SERVICES CONFERENCE
MANHATTAN -- Kansas State University's dining services received several awards at the national conference of the National Association of College and University Food Services, July 9-12, in Washington, D.C.
In the Loyal E. Horton Dining Award competition for successful ideas in menus, presentations, special event planning and dining concept/outlet, K-State received third place in the residence hall dining-single stand alone category for medium-size schools. K-State also received honorable mention in the competition's residence hall dining-catering special event category.
"In the last 20 year, K-State dining services has won more Horton awards than any other university," said John Pence, associate director of housing and dining services. The award is named for Horton, a founder and past president of the National Association of College and University Food Services.
"Creating festive menus made from scratch and using quality foods allows our dining services to excel," Pence said. "Our newest thrust has been using local foods, which is a new judging criteria."
K-State dining services also received first place in the Most Innovative Nutrition Program contest for a nutrition-awareness program created for student residents.
"This yearlong program encouraged student residents to make wise food choices and lead a healthy lifestyle through diet, exercise and balance, Pence said. "This is the second time in the last five years that dining services has taken first place in the contest.
"I am proud of the innovation the dietitians on our staff provide our residents and employees. Access to nutrition information and helping students make good menu choices encourages them to lead a healthy lifestyle."
Melissa Schrader, a registered and licensed dietician with K-State dining services and an instructor in K-State's department of hospitality management and dietetics, received the 2008 President's Award for the Midwest Region of the National Association of College and University Food Services. Only two of these awards are given out each year by region presidents. Schrader, who serves as information officer for the Midwest Region, was recognized for outstanding contributions to the region over the past year.
"The regional President Awards are given to volunteers that have provided unique contributions to National Association of College and University Food Services at the regional level. Melissa was selected as a recipient of this prestigious award because of her hard work and dedication to the Midwest Region," said Nona Golledge of the University of Kansas and president of the Midwest Region.
"Melissa has been instrumental in bringing new ideas to the Midwest Region Council, and has done an outstanding job as the region's information officer," Golledge said. "I have been impressed with her effective leadership skills; she is a rising star in National Association of College and University Food Services, indeed."
The National Association of College and University Food Services assists members and advances the collegiate foodservice industry by providing insight, education, services and knowledge exchange. Dining services at K-State has been an active member of the organization since 1959.
