K-STATE VETERINARY GROUPS JOINING IN WORLD RABIES DAY CELEBRATION
MANHATTAN -- Children's activities, live music and a 5K run are just some of the ways World Rabies Day will be observed locally as a way to raise awareness about the impact of human and animal rabies.
The event will be noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, at Cico Park, Wreath and Kimball avenues, in Manhattan. It is sponsored by Kansas State University's student chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Pre-Vet Club, Rabies Lab and the International Veterinary Student Association, as well as Fort Dodge Animal Health, Pfizer Animal Health, Sharon's Korner Kitchen, Runner's World, Road ID, Waters True Value, Cityzero.net, active.com, LetsGoRun.com and Body First.
World Rabies Day was created by the Alliance for Rabies Control to draw attention to how easy it is to prevent rabies and how to eliminate its sources. Rabies in humans is 100 percent preventable through prompt, appropriate medical care; yet, more than 55,000 people, mostly in Africa and Asia, die from rabies every year -- a rate of one person every 10 minutes, according to the alliance.
Activities in Cico Park will include the free Octabounce inflatable, face painting, games and a juggling workshop, all for children; pet adoptions through the Humane Society; live music from local bands and musicians, including Liars of Local Interest, Fashionably Late and the Red State Blues Band; and massages from Body First with a donation. Food vendors also will be available.
Registration for the 5K run will start at 1 p.m., with the run at 2 p.m. The cost is $20 for people age 16 and older, and $5 for children under 16. The fee includes a T-shirt. Entry forms and entry fees can be mailed to World Rabies Day, Dean's Office, College of Veterinary Medicine, 101 Trotter Hall, 1800 Denison Ave., Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS 66506. Entry forms also can be hand-delivered to the dean's office. Checks should be made to Kansas State University, with World Rabies Day written on the memo portion of the check.
