K-STATE'S MOVIES ON THE GRASS SERIES FEATURES FILMS ON SOCIAL ISSUES
MANHATTAN -- Kansas State University is once again turning its Coffman Commons into a free outdoor movie theater with the annual Movies on the Grass series.
Students and the public are invited to enjoy four free films on contemporary social issues drawn from both domestic and global perspectives. Each film showing also will include special events, raffles, prizes, music and more.
This year's events include an electric vehicle show on opening night and a live concert on the Bosco Student Plaza by Brazilian musicians Banda AfroReggae, the focus of the second documentary in the series, "Favela Rising." The group also will take part in several events Monday, Aug. 27, at K-State. They include morning master classes-workshops, and then a 7:30 p.m. lecture in Forum Hall at the K-State Student Union. The lecture is open to the public.
The Movies on the Grass series is sponsored by K-State Libraries-Dow Chemical Multicultural Resource Center, College of Arts and Sciences, K-State Provost's Office, International Activities Council, Kansas Natural Resources Council and area merchants. Each film will start around 8 p.m. or dusk on Sunday evenings. The movies will be preceded by related activities, which will start one to two hours before the show time.
The schedule and related activities include:
* Sunday, Aug. 19 -- "Who Killed the Electric Car?" is a look at the EV1 electric vehicle by General Motors and its mysterious demise. The car ran on electricity and produced no emissions. It also was claimed to be among the fastest and most efficient production cars ever built. The film explores whether the car was really the victim of poor sales or if it threatened the status quo in the automotive and energy industries. An electric vehicle show will precede the film at 7 p.m., featuring a variety of electric vehicles from dealers across Kansas. In case of rain, the screening will be in Hale Library's Hemisphere Room, on the fifth floor, where seating is limited to 100 people.
* Sunday, Aug. 26 -- "Favela Rising" documents a man and a movement. The film is the story of Anderson Sa, a former drug-trafficker who turns social revolutionary in one of Rio de Janiero's most feared slums. With the use of hip-hop music and Afro-Brazilian dance, Anderson rallies his community to counteract violent oppression enforced by teenage drug armies and sustained by corrupt police. The film will be preceded by a performance from the Banda AfroReggae, which is featured in the film, at 6 p.m. on the Bosco Plaza in front of the K-State Student Union. The rain location for the screening will be in Seaton Hall's Foerester Auditorium, which has seating for 256 people. The concert will be moved to the Union Ballroom.
* Sunday, Sept. 9 -- "Maxed Out" is a look at credit card use and debt and how the modern financial industry really works. Pre-events, which start around 7 p.m., will include raffles, music and fun. The rain location will be Foerester Auditorium.
* Sunday, Sept. 16 -- "Yesterday" was an Oscar nominee for best foreign film. It is the story of a woman in her mid-30s, Yesterday, and her 7-year-old daughter, Beauty, and how they cope in a remote area of South Africa. Pre-events will start around 7 p.m. and include raffles, music and fun. The rain location will be Foerester Auditorium.
