'KOMEN ON THE GO' COMING TO K-STATE
MANHATTAN — Kansas State University's Lafene Health Center, Terry C. Johnson Center for Basic Cancer Research and Union Program Council are co-sponsoring "Komen On the Go," a breast cancer education event, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, on the Bosco Student Plaza in front of the K-State Student Union.
The event is free and open to the public. It includes the "Komen On the Go"pink trailer, an interactive learning center. The hands-on experience features computer kiosks, breast cancer educational materials, breast self-examination guides, and information on how to volunteer locally for breast cancer awareness.
A graffiti wall also will be available so people can share a memory or pledge personal support in the fight against breast cancer. In addition, breast cancer survivors and health care professionals will be on hand to answer questions about breast cancer and share their experiences and expertise.
Marcia Locke, public relations and outreach coordinator for the K-State cancer center, said the event is especially for young women because they are at the time in their lives when they need to start taking control of their own health and learning about the benefits of cancer screening.
"Most times, we think of breast cancer affecting only older women. This event will give everyone an opportunity to learn about breast cancer, how it can affect us all and learn ways to support loved ones facing breast cancer," said Carol Kennedy, director of health promotion at Lafene Health Center.
"Komen On the Go" also will include giveaways and a prize drawing.
"We're going to Paint the Plaza Pink, so to speak," Kennedy said. "K-State is fortunate to have been chosen to host this event. It is a wonderful opportunity to bring the message about breast cancer to our community."
The "Komen On the Go" tour will visit nearly 150 campuses and communities in 2007.
