K-STATE'S CHAPTER OF MORTAR BOARD SELECTS NEW MEMBERS

MANHATTAN -- Kansas State University's chapter of Mortar Board, a national college senior honor society, has selected new members for the 2008-2009 school year.

Members are chosen in the spring of their junior year based on exemplary leadership, scholarship and service. Mortar Board members are active in many leadership-, scholarship- and service-related projects, including weekly readings to children at local day care centers as part of Reading is Leading, the national Mortar Board service project. Members also serve as ushers at K-State's Landon Lectures, host campus guests of the president at athletic events and honor K-State's top faculty and staff. In addition, Mortar Board is the only college student group in the country to coordinate the state-level Academic Decathlon for high school students.

New K-State Mortar Board members are:

Kara Bowman, junior in kinesiology, Basehor, is a member of the Student Alumni Board and a K-State Student Ambassador. She is a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority and has served as a Panhellenic delegate. She is secretary for Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society. She has been a Little Apple Soccer Club Micro Soccer Camp coach and a Relay for Life participant. Bowman is the daughter of Lonnie and Janet Bowman and is a graduate of Manhattan High School.

James Monk, senior in family studies and human services, Bennington, is an ambassador for the College of Arts and Sciences and is a student coordinator for the K-State Volunteer Center of Manhattan. He has volunteered on the Anadarko Native American Reservation and is working with military families affected by posttraumatic stress disorder, deployment and relocation. Monk is the son of John and Tamara Monk.

Nathan Harms, senior in biology, Derby, has been treasurer and bone marrow donation committee gifts coordinator for Alpha Epsilon Delta, the premedical honor society. He is a small group Bible study leader and a leadership team member for Campus Crusade for Christ. He is a kindergarten Sunday School teacher at Crestview Church and an International Friend for Helping International Students. Harms is the son of Allan and Carolyn Harms and a graduate of Mulvane High School.

Kelsey Callaway, junior in animal sciences and industry, El Dorado, is president of Pi Beta Phi sorority. She has received the American Society of Animal Science Scholastic Achievement Award. She has been a Sunset Zoo docent and is working with mentally challenged individuals at Throckmorton Nursery. She volunteers as a Big Sister. Callaway is the daughter of Dave and Jennifer Callaway.

Madison Loeb, senior in political science, Leawood, has been executive vice president of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She is a student senator for the College of Arts and Sciences and a member of the K-State Student Senate's allocations committee. She is the K-State Student Foundation coordinator for the K-State Proud student campaign. Loeb is the daughter of Elbie and Audrey Loeb.

William Poulson, a junior in biology, Leawood, has been both associate justice and chief justice for the Judicial Board of Strong Complex. He is an ambassador for the College of Arts and Sciences. He received a Terry C. Johnson Basic Cancer Research Award, the June D. Hull Sherrid Cancer Center Scholarship and Howard Hughes Medical Institute Award. Poulson is the son of Elisa Cambridge and James Poulson.

Randall Madison, senior in biology, Lenexa, is recruitment chair for Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He has been the director of community and internal relations for the Interfraternity Council. He has tutored at the Douglass Center and logged numerous hours of community service through his Greek organizations. Madison is the son of Randall and Carolyn Madison.

Logan Proctor, senior in chemical engineering, Lenexa, is the region head and officer for the College of Engineering Ambassadors. He has served as the community service chair and the open house chair for the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He is a Chums mentor and a team captain for Relay for Life. He has volunteered for many community groups. He is the son of Gary and Lou Ann Proctor.

Emily Aldredge, junior in electronic journalism, Louisburg, is standards board chair for Pi Beta Phi sorority. She has been a representative on Panhellenic Council. As a leadership studies ambassador, she serves on the education committee, creating presentations for middle schools and high schools. She participated in an alternative spring break in New Orleans. Aldredge is the daughter of Fletcher and Dreama Aldredge.

Jessica Heath, junior in family studies and human services, Manhattan, is a student leader with Younglife and has been a teaching assistant with the university honors program. She held leadership positions in the Silver Key and Chimes honoraries. She is vice president of Future Financial Planners and is scholarship chair for the K-State Student Foundation. Heath is the daughter of Russell and Melanie Heath.

Ashley Phelon, senior in nutritional sciences, Melvern, has served Kappa Alpha Theta sorority as recording secretary and activities chair. She is a student senator for the College of Human Ecology and an ambassador for the Student Governing Association. She was a volunteer for CATS in the Capital and donates numerous hours to the Boys and Girls Club and Relay for Life. Phelon is the daughter of Raylen and Karen Phelon.

Lauren Bauman, senior in pre-professional elementary education, Neodesha, is president of Sigma Kappa sorority and publicity chair for Order of Omega, the Greek honorary. She has volunteered on various service initiatives as a member of Quest, Silver Key and Chimes honoraries. She is a member of the Kansas National Education Association and the K-State Singers. Bauman is the daughter of Chris and Mary Bauman.

Meghan Burrow, junior in marketing, Overland Park, has been a leadership studies ambassador and a leader for the freshman introductory leadership class. She plays in the K-State Marching Band and Symphonic Orchestra. She is a founding member of the Grass Roots Student Sustainability Coalition; she also implemented a recycling program at the Barstow School. Burrow is the daughter of Tim and Rene Burrow.

Cassandra Morrow, senior in mathematics education, Overland Park, is alumnae relations chair of Alpha Delta Pi sorority and is president of Order of Omega, the Greek honorary. She was committee director of the Greek Week steering committee. In the College of Education she holds leadership positions in the student ambassadors and the Kappa Delta Pi education honorary. Morrow is the daughter of John and Charlotte Morrow.

Justin Geist, senior in computer science, Plevna, was a past president of Acacia fraternity. He belonged to the Silver Key and Chimes honoraries and was on the films committee for Union Program Council. He has been part of the College of Engineering Telefund team since his freshman year. His community service includes Lee Elementary School and Drive-By-Rakings. Geist is the son of Tom and Jackie Geist.

Rebecca Bush, senior in history, Pratt, has been a member of the Quest, Silver Key and Chimes honoraries. She belongs to the K-State Marching Band and basketball Cat Band. She was public relations chair and secretary for Tau Beta Sigma, the honorary band service sorority. Her community service includes coordinating the Fort Riley Mom's Day Out. Bush is the daughter of Bob and Jill Bush.

Robert Flack, junior in political science, Riley, is a member of the Student Alumni Board and a K-State Student Ambassador. He is president of Delta Upsilon fraternity, a student senator and an ambassador for the College of Arts and Sciences. He was a youth group assistant for Grace Baptist Church and has been involved with Up 'Til Dawn and the Flint Hills Breadbasket. Flack is the son of Robert and Lynn Flack.

Brett Eakin, senior in management, Rossville, has served on the board of directors for Student Publications Inc. and has been elections commissioner for the Student Governing Association and co-selections chair for Chimes honorary. He is a leadership studies ambassador and serves as president of Acacia fraternity. He has been a youth volunteer for the Kansas Health Foundation. Eakin is the son of Tony and Barb Eakin.

Amy Hoppock, senior in finance, Salina, has been membership vice president of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. She was a class leader for the freshman introductory leadership class and served on the selections committee for the Silver Key honorary. She was captain for an Up 'Til Dawn team. She received the Mortar Board Outstanding Junior Book Scholarship. Hoppock is the daughter of Mike and Polly Hoppock.

Joshua McGinn, senior in history, Sedgwick, has served as a student senator and At-Large Committee member for the Student Governing Association. He was environmental chair for Moore Hall. He has been a member of Silver Key and Chimes honoraries. He has tutored at the Douglass Center. McGinn is the son of Mark and Carolyn McGinn.

Robert Gomez, junior in elementary education, Shawnee, has been vice president of Sigma Lambda Beta International. He belongs to the Kappa Delta Pi education honorary and is a College of Education ambassador and the undergraduate representative for the Diversity for the Community Committee. He is an International Buddy and a Little Apple Soccer Club coach. Gomez is the son of William and Julie Gomez.

Molly Hamm, senior in English, Shawnee, is university relations chair and vice chair of student-centered tuition enhancement for the Student Governing Association. She is founder and coordinator of the Greeks Go Green Campaign. She is a recipient of the Mortar Board Outstanding Junior Book Scholarship. Hamm is the daughter of Tim and Lori Hamm.

Jayne Long, junior in life sciences, Topeka, is an ambassador for the College of Arts and Sciences and is the vice president of the Pre-Physician Assistant Club. She belongs to the Student Health Advisory Council and has participated on pre-health panels for prospective students. She will be part of an international service team to Botswana this summer. Long is the daughter of Brenden and Alaire Long.

Chelsea L'Ecuyer, junior in accounting, Washington, has been vice president of membership for Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She was a K-State orientation leader and is communications co-chair for the College of Business Administration Ambassadors. She tutors for educational supportive services. L'Ecuyer is the daughter of Stephanie Thompson.

Aaron Thiessen, senior in animal sciences and industry, Whitewater, is a tutor for intercollegiate athletics, a genetics teaching assistant and a lab teaching assistant. He is on the Alumni Relations Committee for Alpha Zeta, an agricultural honorary. He volunteers with the Association for Retarded Citizens and as a children's church worship leader at the First Church of the Nazarene. Thiessen is the son of Russell and Terri Thiessen.

Catherine Metzgar, senior in nutrition and exercise science, Mound City, Mo., has been treasurer and vice president of the Human Ecology Council. She also is vice president of the Human Ecology Ambassadors. She was a member of Silver Key, the sophomore honorary. She has participated in the conversational English program and is a Powercat Pride volunteer. Metzgar is the daughter of Bill and Karma Metzgar.

Lauren Gillespie, junior in music, Point Venture, Texas, has served as a music department ambassador. She has been leader and assistant leader for the clarinet section in the K-State Marching Band. She belongs to the Tau Beta Sigma music sorority. Her volunteer work includes the Central States Marching Festival. Gillespie is the daughter of Christie Graves and Thad and Kerstin Gillespie.

Samuel Lewis Jr., junior in political science, Houston, Texas, has been vice president of Black Student Union, serving as a delegate to the Big 12 Conference on Black Student Government. He will be a multicultural assistant for Marlatt Hall. He has been a Big Brother, a mentor to youth and a participant in Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Lewis is the son of Pat Kaiser and Samuel Eugene Lewis.
