K-STATE STUDENT FROM SHAWNEE TO SERVE ON STUDENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE OF AMERICAN DIETETIC ASSOCIATION
MANHATTAN -- A dietetics student from Kansas State University has been elected to serve on the Student Advisory Committee of the American Dietetic Association.
Katie Hamm, a senior from Shawnee, was elected to the committee by student members of the dietetic association. As part of her duties, she will help plan the student workshop that is part of the Food and Nutrition Conference and Exhibit at the American Dietetic Association's annual meeting.
It is the second honor from the association Hamm has received recently. She previously was selected as the alternate student representative on the association's Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education. The commission is the accrediting agency for education programs preparing students for careers as registered dietitians or registered dietetic technicians.
"I have always wanted to get involved with the American Dietetic Association on a national level," Hamm said. "Serving as a student representative, I have the opportunity to work on behalf of dietetics students across the country."
"We're so proud of Katie and her representation of our dietetics program and Kansas State University," said Deborah Canter, head of K-State's department of hotel, restaurant, institution management and dietetics.
A K-State honors list student, Hamm is currently a program assistant with K-State Research and Extension through the department of human nutrition. She is active with several organizations, including serving as president of the K-State Student Dietetic Association. She is a member of Chi Omega sorority and the Kansas State University Student Foundation, and has been selected as a 2008-2009 member of Blue Key, the senior honorary. She also is assistant director of Up 'til Dawn. Hamm has been a counselor for the Wildcat Warm-up Program, and was a member of Silver Key, the sophomore honorary, and Quest, the freshmen leadership honorary. She has been the recipient of several scholarships, including the Human Ecology Fund, Mortar Board and the Bob and Chris Chalender Leadership scholarships.
Hamm plans to intern this summer with Weber Shandwick, a public relations firm in Chicago that hires registered dietitians to work on food and nutrition-related accounts. A 2005 graduate of Shawnee Mission Northwest High School, she is the daughter of Tim and Lori Hamm.
