Monday, April 7, 2014

MANHATTAN — William L. Dunn has been named department head of mechanical and nuclear engineering at Kansas State University. He had been serving as interim head of the department since August 2013.

Dunn joined the College of Engineering faculty at the university in 2002 as an associate professor in mechanical and nuclear engineering, and became director of the radiation measurement applications laboratory in the department in 2003. He has been promoted to full professor, effective June 8, and will serve as the Steven M. and Kay L. Theede Chair in Engineering.

His areas of specialty include radiation physics and engineering, nondestructive evaluation, Monte Carlo methods, probability and statistics, and mathematical modeling and inverse analysis.

He has a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from the University of Notre Dame, and both a Master of Science and doctorate in nuclear engineering from North Carolina State University.

"It is with great pride we welcome Dr. Dunn as the new department head of mechanical and nuclear engineering," said Gary Clark, interim dean of the College of Engineering. "We were aware, of course, of his credentials and experience prior to and during his exemplary service as interim department head, and following a nationwide search and interview process, were extremely pleased to offer him the full-time position."

Before coming to Kansas State University, Dunn had served as president, chairman of the board and radiation safety officer at Quantum Research Services Inc., Durham, N.C. Before that he had been a deputy division manager and head of the nuclear and mechanical engineering unit, principal engineer and senior engineer, all at Applied Research Associates Inc., Raleigh, N.C.

Dunn is an active member of both the American Nuclear Society and the International Radiation Physics Society, has been published numerous times and cited with many honors and awards in the fields of radiation and nuclear energy. He holds two individual patents and is a patent participant on two other projects.
