Ruling the airwaves: University takes home most undergraduate, graduate honors in Kansas Association of Broadcasters' student competition

MANHATTAN -- Radio work by Kansas State University students earned the most honors -- including the most first-place honors -- in the 2012 Kansas Association of Broadcasters' 2012 Student Broadcast Awards competition at the collegiate level.

The honors were presented April 3 in Wichita at the association's annual student seminar and career fair. The competition included a division for high schools and one for community colleges, colleges and universities in Kansas.

Kansas State University students earned 27 awards overall, including 16 first-place honors, six second-place honors and five honorable mentions. The honors were for work done by students at the university's FM radio station KSDB, the Wildcat 91.9, in the undergraduate and graduate divisions. Students also received honors for work done as radio station interns.

Students receiving honors for individual or team efforts include:

Daniel Flores, senior in arts and sciences-open option, Derby, second place in complete taped newscast and honorable mention in station promotion announcement and 30-second commercial PSA or donor announcement, all undergraduate radio division.

Dan Page, senior in journalism and mass communications, Derby, first place for station promotion announcement, sports play-by-play and complete taped newscast, all undergraduate radio division; first place in complete taped newscast, complete live newscast, sportscast and sports play-by-play, all radio intern division; second place in complete live newscast, undergraduate radio division; and honorable mention in public affairs programming, undergraduate radio division.

Andrew Collingwood, junior in microbiology, Leawood, first place in promotion event/activity, undergraduate radio division.

Meredith Lindsey, May 2011 bachelor's graduate in mass communication and theater, Leawood, first place in complete live newscast, undergraduate radio division.

Kyle Lundy, senior in fine arts, Leawood, first place in promotion event/activity, undergraduate radio division.

Edward Bohannon, junior in journalism and mass communications, Lenexa, first place for DJ personality air check and for promotion event/activity, both undergraduate radio division.

Jared Clark, sophomore in journalism and mass communications, Manhattan, first and second places for station promotion announcement, undergraduate radio division; first and second places in 30-second commercial or PSA, graduate radio division; first place for station promotion announcement and for sportscast, both graduate radio division; second place for 30-second commercial, PSA or donor announcement, undergraduate radio division; and honorable mention in 30-second commercial, PSA or donor announcement, complete live newscast and DJ personality air check, all undergraduate radio division.

Mary Renee Shirk, master's student in journalism and mass communications, Manhattan, first place for 30-second commercial or PSA, station promotion announcement, sportscast and DJ personality air check, and second place in 30-second commercial or PSA, all graduate radio division.

Joey Lutz, senior in sociology, Overland Park, first place in promotion event/activity, undergraduate radio division.

Meg Drake, senior in agricultural communications and journalism, Winfield, first place in public affairs program, radio intern division.

Brandon Tadtman, senior in social sciences, Winfield, honorable mention in station promotion announcement, undergraduate radio division.

Jarrett Taylor, December 2011 bachelor's graduate in sociology, Boulder, Colo., second place in sportscast, radio intern division.
