NEBRASKA WOMAN PURSUES DEGREE IN ANIMAL SCIENCES AND INDUSTRY THROUGH K-STATE DISTANCE EDUCATION

MANHATTAN -- Kristin Bohling, Nehawka, Neb., needed to balance a full work schedule and a family with her educational pursuits. Kansas State University distance education has made it possible.

After obtaining her associate degree, Bohling worked as a veterinary technician at a Nebraska medical center. She now works 10-hour shifts as an instructor for Vatterott College, but she wanted to complete a bachelor's degree.

When her boss recommended K-State distance education, Bohling went online to research degree possibilities and decided on a degree in animal sciences and industry through K-State's bachelor's degree completion program.

Distance education has fit well into Bohling's busy lifestyle. She said she has little time and energy left to travel to a college campus and sit in a lecture after completing all of her daily responsibilities at work and at home.

"The best part of distance education for me was not having to worry about time frames," she said. "This option is great for people who have a busy schedule. This was the best option for me."

Bohling has been especially satisfied with the convenience of K-State's distance delivery methods and the quality of communication available between distance students and professors.

"Your instructor will talk to you as if you're in class," she said. “You feel like you are the only student in the room. They know you personally by the time you're done."

K-State also has worked with Bohling to provide the resources she needs to be successful in her education.

"I live in the country, and K-State distance education provides access to educational resources. I just call them, tell them what article I need, and they e-mail it to me," she said.

Bohling receives information about what courses to take, when to enroll and what to expect next. "They kept track of me as a student and my educational goals," she said.

Set to graduate in May, Bohling thinks that her K-State bachelor's degree will allow her to work in a field she enjoys and open new doors in terms of what jobs she can take on in the future.
