K-STATE BETA ALPHA PSI CHAPTER TAKES HOME FIRST PLACE WITH BEST PRACTICES PRESENTATION

MANHATTAN -- The Kansas State University chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, a financial information honorary, received first place for its Best Practices presentation at the Beta Alpha Psi Missouri Valley Regional Meeting March 31 in Kansas City, Mo.

Six K-State Beta Alpha Psi members gave a presentation about Boys and Girls Club activities as they competed in the "sustained and recognized service to the university community and/or civic community" category. With the win, the chapter is now eligible to compete at the annual meeting in Chicago in August.

The presentation, which was limited to 10 minutes, involved a speech and PowerPoint presentation about K-State's service activities with the Boys and Girls Club throughout the past year. The group organized activities for the National Boys and Girls Club Day in September, put on a Halloween party with games in October, donated proceeds from the K-State Telefund in January, and coordinated an Easter egg hunt this month.

"This is the first time that our students have won first place at the regional competition," said Kim Charland, instructor of accounting and faculty co-adviser of Beta Alpha Psi. "They worked very hard on the projects and presentation, and they are looking forward to the annual competition in August."

In addition to Charland, Beta Alpha Psi faculty advisers include outgoing co-adviser Jo Lyle, instructor of accounting, and incoming co-adviser Monica Woods, instructor of accounting.

The six members of the regional competition's presentation team, all accounting majors, are: Kim Grieves, junior, Auburn; Hailey Berry, junior, Cimarron; Erin Kanning, senior, Lancaster; Patrick Karcz, senior, Leawood; Melissa Kramer, senior, Seneca; and Tim Russell, junior, Wichita.

Two members that couldn't make it to the regional competition but will join the team in Chicago are Katie Parker, senior in accounting, Olathe; and Sarah Teefey, junior in accounting, Shawnee.

Beta Alpha Psi is an international organization formed to give recognition to both scholastic and professional excellence and provide a forum to accounting students for extracurricular activities.
