Kansas State University psychology professor James Shanteau's
research program is internationally recognized for having a strong
influence on the field. He has served on the editorial board of
seven prominent journals and serves as an ad-hoc reviewer for
many others. He co-founded the Judgment/Decision Making Society
and has served as a program director at the National Science Foundation.
He is a Fellow in four divisions of the American Psychological
Association and a Charter Fellow of the American Psychological
Society, an honor reserved for select individuals whose work and
writing have substantially affected the progress of their disciplines.
His research interests include the analysis of expertise in decision
makers, including air traffic control, and the investigation of
consumer health care choices, especially organ donation and transplant
decisions.
Shanteau's research has resulted in the publication of more than 63 articles in referred journals, 10 books and 63 book chapters, nine encyclopedia entries, seven monographs, 21 proceeding papers, 14 technical reports and three computer programs. His work has been supported by four fellowships and 34 grants or contracts from agencies including the National Science Foundation, Federal Aviation Administration, National Institute of Mental Health, Division of Organ Transplantation, Army Research Institute and National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. In 2003 he earned the Commerce Bank Distinguished Graduate Faculty Award. A K-State faculty member since 1971, Shanteau was promoted to full professor in 1980. From 1989-1990 he served as program director of the Decision, Risk and Management Science Program at the National Science Foundation. He was co-founder, executive committee chair and president of the Society for Judgment/Decision Making. He also was interim associate vice provost for research at K-State from 1993-94 and served as director of the Institute for Social and Behavior Research at K-State from 1994-99. Currently he is director of the KANsas Traffic Research Operations Laboratory at K-State.
