RICHARD HAYTER
Associate dean for external affairs, College of Engineering
Professor of engineering

 

Richard HayterRichard Hayter, associate dean for external affairs for the College of Engineering, is a licensed professional engineer, a former cabinet member for the Kansas governor and has served as the mayor of Manhattan. In 2000, the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce named Hayter Citizen of the Year for his service to the community as well as his professional accomplishments.

Since joining the K-State faculty in 1980, Hayter has worked as a professor of mechanical engineering, assistant director of K-State Research and Extension, director of engineering extension and part-time legislative liaison for the university. During his time at K-State, he also served on the governor's cabinet as director of the Kansas Energy Office.

Hayter also has received attention for his involvement in the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers. He has served terms as president, vice president, treasurer and director-at-large for the society since joining in 1968. Hayter has received the society's Ralph J. Nevins Award for outstanding contribution to the study of human environments, the distinguished service award, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers Fellow Award and the medal for distinguished public service. The society also awarded him the John F. James International Award, for increasing the organization's international presence.

A licensed professional engineer, Hayter is a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers and Kansas Society of Professional Engineers. He is also the faculty adviser for the K-State engineering honor society, Tau Beta Pi.

Hayter was selected for the Distinguished Engineer award from the College of Engineering at South Dakota State University, as well as the school's Distinguished Mechanical Engineer Award. In addition, he has won the Dow Chemical Young Faculty Award.

In addition to his professional recognitions, Hayter's accomplishments stretch to the Manhattan community. He has served as mayor and city commissioner, and as a member of the Manhattan Urban Area Planning Board, Boy Scout Coronado Area Council Executive Board, Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce Board and the Manhattan Regional Airport Advisory Board.

He received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from South Dakota State University and his master's and doctoral degrees in mechanical engineering from K-State.
