HOWARD ERICKSON
Professor of physiology

Howard EricksonHoward Erickson is a professor of physiology in Kansas State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, where he is the course coordinator of a 7-hour course in systemic physiology and teaches the cardiovascular and exercise physiology sections of the course in the first year of the veterinary curriculum.

Erickson came to K-State in 1981 after serving as a veterinarian, research scientist and research and development manager in the U.S. Air Force for over 20 years. He was commissioned a First Lieutenant in 1959 and retired as a Colonel.

His research interests are in exercise physiology with a special emphasis on the horse and exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage, a condition that affects many equine athletes and causes blood vessels in the horses' lungs to burst. He has studied the effectiveness of different treatments that may prevent this ailment, such as nasal strips, concentrated equine serum, herbal remedies, and omega-3 fatty acids. He is also a co-principal investigator on the project "An Infrastructure for Veterinary Telemedicine -- Proactive Herd Health Management for Disease Prevention from Farm to Market," which is funded by the National Science Foundation.

Erickson was recognized with the 1993 Merck AGVET Award for Creativity in Teaching, the 2000 Bayer Excellence in Equine Research Award, and the E.R. Frank Award. He also was the first recipient of the Dr. Roy Walter Upham Endowed Professorship in 2002. Erickson has earned numerous other awards and honors and also has served on dozens of committees, panels and study sections for the College of Veterinary Medicine, K-State and several national and international organizations.

Erickson has reviewed manuscripts and proposals for numerous journals, publishers and granting agencies, been awarded nearly 70 research grants and contracts and has supervised the research of several graduate students. Since 1965, he has published more than 260 articles, books and abstracts and has been invited to give at least 84 lectures, presentations and seminars.  In 2005, he authored "A Century of Excellence," the history of the College of Veterinary Medicine with Dr. Elmore.

Erickson is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Physiological Society, the American Association of Equine Practitioners, and the American Veterinary Medical History Society.

Erickson earned his doctorate in veterinary medicine from K-State in 1959 and went on to earn a doctoral degree in veterinary physiology from Iowa State University in 1966.
