NATIONAL EXPERT TO LEAD INNOVATION

A nationally known expert in biosciences and animal health is joining K-State in January as head of the university's Olathe Innovation Campus.

Veterinarian Dr. Daniel C. Richardson is currently vice president, Pet Nutrition Center, and chief animal welfare veterinarian for Hill's Pet Nutrition Inc. in Topeka. In his new post he will be chief executive officer of the K-State Olathe Innovation Campus Inc.

"Dan Richardson brings a lifetime of expertise to this position," said K-State President Jon Wefald. "His enthusiasm and innovative ideas will be a great fit for the Olathe campus. One of K-State's goals is work force preparation at many levels. Dan's background will ensure K-State's ability to deliver on the promise to develop world-class researchers right there in the community."

Richardson will work with area education leaders to establish and develop opportunities for students to learn about careers in animal health.

A native of Manhattan, Richardson received an associate's degree from Colby Community College and his bachelor's and DVM degrees from K-State. He completed a surgery/medicine internship at Auburn University and a surgical residency at the University of Tennessee. He became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1983.

Richardson has received numerous awards for clinical and teaching excellence at three different institutions, including the Norden Distinguished Teacher Award at both Purdue and North Carolina State University.

He served as assistant professor of surgery at Purdue and was both an assistant and associate professor of surgery at North Carolina State University. He is an adjunct professor at North Carolina State University and K-State.

NOV. 30 PAYCHECK UPDATE

Premiums for group health insurance, KPERS optional group life insurance, TEA life insurance and contributions to the KanElect flexible spending accounts will not be deducted from the Nov. 30 paycheck because it is the third paycheck of the month.

Additionally, 12-month unclassified employees do not earn an eight-hour vacation day for the pay period Nov. 4-17, paid Nov. 30. Also, unclassified employees appointed to less than 12-month non-instructional positions do not earn vacation leave for this same pay period.

END OF SEMESTER DEADLINES

Finals week is Dec. 10-14, and the deadline for returning I-NR grades is Dec. 14. Final grade sheets are due in enrollment services by noon for examinations given Dec. 10-12, and by noon Dec. 19 for examinations given Dec. 13 and 14.

EMPLOYEE ORIENTATION DEC. 10

Employee orientation programs will take place from 8:30-10:30 a.m. for new classified staff and from 9:30-11:30 a.m. for new unclassified staff and faculty. Both programs are scheduled for Monday, Dec. 10, in 103 Edwards Hall. The programs are sponsored by the Division of Human Resources. Call 532-6277 to register.

VAN OPERATOR TRAINING OFFERED

The K-State Division of Facilities will host van operator training from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, in Room 213 of the K-State Student Union. K-State at Salina will offer training from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3, in Facilities Room 101. National Safety Council training will be conducted for all operators or potential operators of motor pool vans driven by faculty, staff and students. The training is mandatory for all operators. This performance by the K-State dance faculty and students will take place at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 29 and Dec. 1, Nichols Theater, Nichols Hall. For tickets call 532-6428.

Nov. 30
Biosecurity forum

The National Agricultural Biosecurity Forum, featuring Ludek Zurek, will be at 3 p.m. in Room 212 of the K-State Student Union. There will be introductory comments by Marty Vanier and Curtis Kastner, followed by Zurek’s lecture, ''Antibiotic Resistance as a Food Safety Issue." At 4 p.m. there will be a chance for questions.

AIDS concert and poetry
Part of World AIDS Awareness Week at K-State, the event will take place at 7 p.m. in Union Station, K-State Student Union.

Dec. 2
Singing at All Faiths Chapel

The K-State Singers, Men’s and Women’s Glee Clubs, Cadence and Rhapsody Ringers, under the conduction of Julie Yu and Dan Commerford, will perform at 2 p.m., All Faiths Chapel Auditorium. Admission is charged.

Family Holiday Workshop
The Beach Museum of Art will host the workshop from 2-4 p.m. There will be food and crafts. Reservations are not needed, but it costs $3 per child. Children must have an adult present.

Dec. 4
Author visit
Robert J. Sawyer, winner of the Hugo and Nebula awards, is the keynote speaker for the dedication of the David J. Williams III Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Collection. The lecture and reception will begin at 2:30 p.m., Hemisphere Room, Hale Library. A book signing will follow.

Orchestra performance
The K-State Orchestra, conducted by David Littrell, will perform at 7:30 p.m. in McCain Auditorium.

Dec. 5
Classified senate meeting
The meeting will be at 12:45 p.m., Room 212, K-State Student Union.

Jazz performance
K-State’s jazz combos, directed by Wayne Goins, will perform at 7:30 p.m., Union Station, K-State Student Union.

Dec. 6
Brass at All Faiths Chapel
The K-State Faculty Brass Quintet will perform at 7:30 p.m., All Faiths Chapel.

Dec. 11
Faculty senate meeting

The meeting will be at 3:30 p.m. in the Big 12 Room, K-State Student Union.

Beach Museum
Ladies Night
''Arts Above the Arch: Ladies Night," will be from 6:30-9 p.m., Beach Museum of Art. There will be a tour of the exhibit ''Paths to the Press," and participants can create cards using white-line printmaking. The event is $10 per person and reservations are required. Call 532-7718.

A new chapter begins

Nearly 1,400 K-State students are candidates for degrees at the university's fall commencement ceremonies Friday, Dec. 7, and Saturday, Dec. 8, in Salina and Manhattan. Read more

REAGAN RECOGNIZED AS AVIATION LEADER

Chuck ReaganCharles Reagan has joined a select group of individuals whose aeronautical contributions helped make Kansas a world leader in aviation.

Reagan, associate to the president at K-State and a professor of philosophy, received this year's Kansas Governor's Aviation Honor Award. His aviation experience spans four decades and includes thousands of safely flown hours as a certified flight instructor and as a King Air and Citation Jet captain with four trans-Atlantic flights.

Reagan serves on the National Business Aircraft Association Safety Committee because of his experience in the training and transportation environments.

MORTAR BOARD HONORS OUTSTANDING FACULTY

Outstanding contributions to scholarship, leadership and service in the classroom and community have earned nine faculty members recognition from K-State's chapter of Mortar Board senior honorary.

The faculty members were nominated by students in their colleges. Mortar Board members made the final selections and recognized the honorees in October. Faculty members earning recognition from Mortar Board:

Robert Burton, professor of agricultural economics, College of Agriculture; Diane Potts, assistant to the dean, College of Architecture, Planning and Design; Marcelo Sabates, associate professor and head of the department of philosophy, College of Arts and Sciences; Robert K. Schaeffer, professor of sociology, anthropology and social work, College of Arts and Sciences; Johanna Lyle, instructor in accounting, College of Business Administration; Judith Hughey, associate professor of special education counseling and student affairs, College of Education; Mary Rezac, professor and department head of chemical engineering, College of Engineering; Kelly Welch, instructor in family studies and human services, College of Human Ecology; and Amy Button Renz, president of the K-State Alumni Association, outstanding student affairs recipient.

LOGBACK WINS NEAT AWARD

Steve LogbackSteve Logback, director of communications for the K-State Alumni Association, received the 2008 Professional Development Scholarship from the National Educational Alumni Trust.

Logback was one of 15 winners selected by the scholarship committee. Scholarships enable recipients to attend a development conference in 2008. According to Amy Button Renz, president of the K-State Alumni Association and chair of the board of directors, "This financial assistance to alumni professionals allows recipients to enhance their knowledge and skills, network with other professionals and contribute to the mission of alumni relations. The NEAT Scholarship benefits its member alumni associations at colleges and universities nationwide."

 

 

POINTS OF PRIDE

K-State finance professor wins Fulbright

Amir Tavakkol, associate professor of finance in the College of Business Administration, has been named a Fulbright senior scholar.

Next spring, Tavakkol will teach corporate finance and investments and will research earnings management at the Europa-Universität Viadrina in Frankfurt on the Oder.

Tavakkol has been a visiting scholar at Cambridge University in England. He is K-State’s Mark R. Truitt Professor of Business.

 

Sue Peterson holds the Robert S. Krause Alpha Tau Omega Outstanding Campus Leader Award.
