WEFALD RECOGNIZED WITH HONORARY DEGREE

President Jon Wefald is being recognized with an honorary degree from Southwest Minnesota State University, which he led as president from 1977-82.

Wefald will return May 12 to Marshall, Minn., to accept an honorary degree and to deliver the university's commencement address. After the commencement ceremony, Wefald will be recognized with an official dedication ceremony noting his achievements and accomplishments while president at Southwest Minnesota State University.

David C. Danahar, current president of Southwest Minnesota State, said he is "delighted that Jon Wefald will return to the campus to receive the recognition he so clearly deserves." Read more

THREE NAMED UNIVERSITY DISTINGUISHED PROFESSORS

A chemist, a biochemist and a political scientist are K-State's three newest university distinguished professors, a lifetime title that represents the highest honor K-State can bestow on its faculty.

Newly named university distinguished professors are Dale Herspring, political science; Duy Hua, chemistry; and Subbaratnam Muthukrishnan, biochemistry. Each recipient will receive a $10,000 salary supplement and will be honored at fall commencement ceremonies in December.

"I am extremely impressed with the accomplishments of these internationally recognized professors," said K-State Provost M. Duane Nellis. "Such faculty contribute significantly to our efforts to be among the premier land grant institutions nationally."

OH, BY THE WAY...

RENTING OUTDOOR EQUIPMENT MADE EASY

The Outdoor Rental Center at the K-State Rec Complex offers a variety of equipment that can be rented for a day, a week or even longer with special arrangements.

Equipment for rental includes canoes, kayaks, life jackets, backpacks, camping stoves, lanterns and sleeping bags. Fees range from $2 to $20 per day.

Any student, faculty or staff member with a Rec Services membership is eligible to rent through the the center. For questions on how to use any of the equipment, contact Tim Stoecklein at 532-6980.

The Outdoor Rental Center is on the east side of the Rec Complex by the tennis courts and is open Monday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

SPRING 2007 ELECTRONIC GRADE SUBMISSION TRAINING

Orientation sessions for the Electronic Grade Submission system will be available April 23, 2:30 p.m., K-State Student Union, Room 206; May 3, 10 a.m., K-State Student Union, Room 213 (polycom available); and May 4, 11 a.m., Hale Library, Room 114. Access to the system is granted to faculty, staff and graduate teaching assistants once they either attend an orientation session or complete an online tutorial.

The Electronic Grade Submission system will be available from 8 a.m. May 7 to 11:30 a.m. May 16. To register for either the orientation session or the online tutorial, visit http://main.itac.k-state.edu/training/enroll/egs.htm

PUTTING STUDENTS FIRST AWARDS

Institutional Advancement will sponsor the Putting Student First Award for Outstanding Service to Students. One faculty member and one full-time institutional advancement staff member will be recognized.

Nominations must include a letter of nomination and a letter of support from a K-Stater, preferably a student. No self-nominations will be accepted.
Nomination deadline is 4 p.m. April 30. Selections will be announced May 15.

K-State theater presentation

K-State Theater will present the Shakespeare comedy "Much Ado About Nothing" at 8 p.m. April 19-21 and 25-28 in Nichols Theatre. Tickets are available from the McCain Box Office or the K-State Student Union Little Theatre Box Office.

McCain Performance Series event

The Sleeping Beauty
The Moiseev Russian Classical Ballet with orchestra will present Tchaikovsky's version of "The Sleeping Beauty" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 21, in McCain Auditorium as part of Kansas State University's McCain Performance Series. "Tchaikovsky's tale is a family-friendly version of this classic and is an ideal opportunity to introduce ballet to someone new," said Thomas Jackson, McCain marketing director. A pre-performance lecture will be given by Joyce Yagerline, K-State associate professor of speech communication, theater and dance, at 6:30 p.m. in 204 McCain. DNA expert presentation

A Princeton University physics professor who is using nanotechnology to better understand the physics behind DNA interactions and other biological processes will speak at K-State. Robert H. Austin will present "Darwin Meets Nano" at 4:30 p.m. April 23 in 102 Cardwell Hall.

Distinguished scholar lecture

Roger McHaney, K-State professor of management information systems and Coffman Chair for University Distinguished Teaching Scholars, will present "If the World is Flat, Why am I Trudging Uphill?: Musings on How Distance Education, the Internet and Globalization Impact Teaching in Kansas" from 1:30-3 p.m. April 25 in the Hemisphere Room at Hale Library. The presentation is part of the Provost's Lecture Series.

A faculty/staff golf tournament will be April 27 at Rolling Meadows Golf Course in Junction City. Tee times are available between 7:15 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Beach museum exhibit

"Michael Krueger: 2007 Friends of the Beach Museum of Art Gift Print Artist" exhibition will be on display in the Beach Museum of Art April 27-July 1.

Each year, an artist is selected to produce a limited edition print available exclusively to Friends members. The selected artist then has an exhibition at the museum.

Debut of jazz series

The debut airing of the KSU Jazz All Stars program will broadcast on KST8 - Cable Channel 8 at 5 p.m. April 29, and will simulcast in stereo on K-State radio KSDB 91.9.

Water to the rescue

Dogs and cats may find themselves under water for rehabilitation at K-State's Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Introduced to K-State's veterinary program in spring 2006, underwater rehabilitation treatment uses a combination of swimming, underwater exercises and an underwater treadmill to improve range of motion or coordination for small animals. RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP TO TAKE HUBBELL OVERSEAS

A K-State faculty member has received a summer research fellowship for her project regarding the exile of former French citizens of Algeria, the Pieds-Noirs.

Amy Hubbell, assistant professor of modern languages, was awarded a $750 Northeast Modern Language Association summer research fellowship for "Reconstructing the Past: The Pieds-Noirs 45 Years after Algerian Independence." Hubbell was one of six recipients of the award.

The Northeast Modern Language Association is a scholarly organization for professionals in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and other modern languages.

VISION RESEARCH ASSOCIATION HONORS K-STATE PROFESSOR

Larry Takemoto, university distinguished professor of biology, will receive the Distinguished Service Award from the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. The award recognizes Takemoto's contributions to the organization; he has been a member of the association since 1974 and served as 2005-2006 president. The award will be presented at the organization's annual meeting May 6-10 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Takemoto's research in vision and lens protein biochemistry has contributed to the fundamental knowledge of the lens and the molecular details of cataract formation. He has received numerous federal and industry grants for his research from organizations including the National Institutes of Health's National Eye Institute.

MARKETING SPECIALIST HONORED FOR LEADERSHIP, SKILLS

Linda Sleichter, marketing specialist, department of communications, will receive the Pioneer Award from the Association for Communications Excellence in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Life and Human Sciences. The award honors communicators who demonstrate leadership and technical skills and make contributions to the association during their early careers, and will be presented June 17 in Albuquerque, N.M.

Sleichter's selection was based on her leadership of Content Management System Web projects for the College of Agriculture, K-State Research and Extension, and local offices; and her leadership in writing and gaining administrative approval of K-State Research and Extension's Five-Year Marketing Plan, which will be implemented this year.

She is the Kansas ACE State Leader, and also chair of the ACE marketing special interest group.

BHANDARI TO BE RECOGNIZED FOR BEST PAPER

Alok Bhandari, associate professor of civil engineering, will receive a Best Paper Award from the Environmental Engineering Division of the American Society of Engineering Education. The award will be presented at the association's annual conference, June 24-27, Honolulu, Hawaii.

The award is for authoring the paper "Diversity in Environmental Engineering: The Good and Bad."

HUMAN ECOLOGY RECOGNIZING FACULTY MEMBERS FOR WORK

The College of Human Ecology is recognizing three faculty members for their outstanding contributions to teaching and research.

Tonatiuh Melgarejo, assistant professor of human nutrition, is receiving the College of Human Ecology Faculty Research Award.
John E. Grable, associate professor of family studies and human services, and Richard C. Baybutt, associate professor of human nutrition, were selected for the Dawley-Scholer Award for Excellence in Student Development.

SIGMA XI HONORS OUTSTANDING K-STATE SCIENTISTS

K-State's chapter of Sigma Xi, a scientific research society, has selected its 2007 Sigma Xi Outstanding Junior and Senior Scientists.

Xiuzhi Susan Sun, professor of grain science and industry, is being honored as the Outstanding Senior Scientist. Sigifredo Castro-Diaz, instructor of chemical engineering and an associate engineer at K-State's Advanced Manufacturing Institute, and Seok-Ho Park, research chemist, Grain Quality and Structure Research Center, U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service, are the 2007 Outstanding Junior Scientists.
The awards are given to recognize K-State Sigma Xi members who have demonstrated outstanding ability in scientific research. The Outstanding Junior Scientist award is given to someone who received his or her terminal degree less than seven years ago. Awardees will receive $100 honoraria and certificates.

Leadership studies celebrates 10 years

Leadership studies and programs is celebrating 10 years of emphasizing personal leadership development through practical experiences and a structured learning environment at K-State.

Leadership studies and programs was established in 1997 by Susan Scott, director and assistant vice president for institutional advancement; Pat Bosco, dean of student life and associate vice president for institutional advancement; and Robert Shoop, senior scholar and professor of educational leadership.

The program has grown to encompass civic leadership, and a nonprofit leadership emphasis in addition to the regular minor. K-State's leadership studies program is part of the educational leadership department in the College of Education.

Andrew SmithAndrew Smith, aviation, was elected to the Aviation Technician Education Council Executive Board of Directors during the council's national conference, March 31-April 3, Orlando, Fla.
