Kansas State University achievements

2003 K-State at Salina

* Dennis Kuhlman, dean of Kansas State University's College of Technology and Aviation on the Salina campus, has been named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Salina Noon Rotary Club. The honor is the highest recognition Rotary awards to its members who have distinguished themselves both in their careers and through their support of the ideals of the organization. September 2003

* There are approximately 81,000 certificated flight instructors in the United States, and fewer than 400 have earned the master certificated flight instructor designation, awarded by the National Association of Flight Instructors and recognized by the Federal Aviation Administration. Three faculty members at the K-State at Salina campus have earned master status: Bill Gross, chief pilot and professor; associate professor Barney King, head of the professional pilot program; and assistant professor Eric Shappee. There are only 10 master instructors in the entire state of Kansas and three are at K-State. September 2003

* The K-State at Salina flight team coach was named National Intercollegiate Flying Association Coach of the Year at the National Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference — SAFECON — held May 17-21 at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. The flight team is in the College of Technology and Aviation, located on K-State's Salina campus. Brockway helped lead the team to its best ever finish at the national competition this year. More than 250 students from 27 different schools around the country competed in the event, and the K-State team finished 18th in flight events and tied for 19th place overall. The performance at nationals follows a strong third place finish in the regional SAFECON competition, hosted on the Salina campus in October 2002. Brockway, an assistant professor of aviation, has coached the flight team since 1998. His selection as coach of the year was based on nominations from the flight team members. June 2003
