2002 Student Groups

* K-State's Students for Environmental Action won the $3,000 Waste Management/Recycle America - America Recycles Day Award for their America Recycles Day programming and public outreach. They competed against 19 states to win one of nine awards presented nationally. The group also was recognized for their recycling efforts with the Mayor's Sustainability Award. The award was presented at a Manhattan City Commission meeting April 6. This award was given to three local organizations, all striving for a more sustainable community. April 2002

* K-State's Interfraternity and Panhellenic Greek councils won a total of 16 programming awards and received overall excellence awards at the Mid-American Greek Association Conference Feb. 21-24 in Chicago. K-State applied for eight programming categories per council and walked away with all 16 honors in the following categories: academic achievement; leadership and educational development, risk reduction and management; self governance and judicial affairs; membership recruitment; public relations; philanthropy and community service; and council management. K-State's Panhellenic Council received the Sutherland Award, an overall excellence award based on eight to 13 sorority systems, and named "Best Sorority System in the Midwest." The Interfraternity Council also received the Jellison Award, an overall excellence award based on 24 or more fraternities, and named "Best Fraternity System in the Midwest." This is the second consecutive year for both the Interfraternity and Panhellenic councils to win overall excellence awards. Since 1985, K-State has secured an overall excellence award recognition each year for either the Interfraternity or Panhellenic council. March 2002
