Kansas State University achievements

2002 K-State at Salina

* Kevin Giefer, a flight instructor at K-State at Salina and native of Cheney, Kan., won a $15,000 national CAE SimuFlite scholarship. Giefer's application included a 250-word essay on his goals in corporate aviation, as well as his college transcripts and letters of recommendation. Although there were more than 400 applicants for the annual award in 2002, a mere three scholarships were awarded through the University Aviation Association. The CAE SimuFlite program, which took place Sept. 10-23, is run by CAE's civil simulation and training and gives the scholarship winners the opportunity to earn Citation V type ratings. The new rating gives Giefer FAA approval to fly in a wide variety of Citation aircraft, including the 500, 550 and 560 series Citations. He also is now rated as a pilot-in-command for a Citation V jet. November 2002

* K-State at Salina's flight team earned the right to compete at this year's National Intercollegiate Flying Association's National Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference — SAFECON — by placing third overall at the Region VI SAFECON Oct. 15-19, at K-State at Salina. The national conference will be May 17-21 at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. More than 80 students from eight different schools, including the University of Nebraska, Oklahoma State University and the University of Oklahoma competed in the event. The K-State at Salina team finished second in the overall ground events and fourth in the overall flight events, and Rosalee Harris, senior in airway science from Haysville, was ranked the fifth top pilot overall in the competition. SAFECON is devoted to the skill, safety, sport and education in college flying. A series of ground and flight events are conducted during the competition. November 2002

* K-State at Salina residence hall students and the college's residence life program received top honors in the small school category at the National Association of College and University Residence Halls national conference. The delegation from K-State at Salina received the Best Small School Spirit Award. The award is given to a university's delegation for the best overall participation in conference activities, program presentations, assistance to others at the conference, timeliness and attendance at conference events, pride in school and an overall positive attitude. The college was selected from more than 140 small colleges from around the country participating in the conference. The residence halls adviser is Delton Gordon, residence life coordinator.
