K-STATE RESEARCHERS DEVELOPING TECHNOLOGY TO MAKE PRODUCTS LIKE VEGETABLE SHORTENING, MARGARINE WITHOUT TRANS FATTY ACIDS: Try making a batch of biscuits or a flakey piecrust without trans fats, and you won't find too many options. But technology being developed at Kansas State University could allow food manufacturers to create vegetable shortening and other hydrogenated oils without artery-clogging trans fatty acids.

K-STATE PROFESSOR INVESTIGATING POSSIBLE LINK BETWEEN OBESITY AND CANCER: George Wang is a bioscience detective on the trail of two very dangerous criminals: obesity and cancer. Wang, an associate professor of human nutrition at Kansas State University, is the principal investigator on a study looking at a link between the two.

K-STATE PROFESSOR LOOKS TO FIND WAYS TO STOP ORGAN DAMAGE WHEN BLOOD FLOW IS CUT OFF: Lack of blood flow to the intestines during surgery, to the heart during a heart attack or to the brain during a stroke can cause damage to the organ involved. However, more damage occurs when the blood returns to the organ. Sherry Fleming thinks she knows why and is working to find therapeutic ways to prevent this damage.

K-STATE TO COLLABORATE ON RESEARCH TO FORECAST ECOLOGICAL CONSEQUENCES OF ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES: How do climate change and other global environmental changes affect the average Kansan? Researchers at Kansas State University are working to find out.

K-STATE STUDENTS TAKE HONORS IN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION: Two interior architecture and product design students from Kansas State University were among the top five winners at the 2007 Exhibit Designers and Producers Association International Student Design Competition.

K-STATE SIGNS CONTRACT WITH KABUL UNIVERSITY TO STRENGTHEN HIGHER EDUCATION IN AFGHANISTAN: Representatives from Kansas State University and Kabul University in Afghanistan have signed two three-year contracts worth $5.5 million to improve the College of Engineering and the department of English at Kabul University. Funds are provided by the World Bank.

EIGHT K-STATE STUDENTS DEEMED 'EXTRAORDINARY' BY STAFF, FACULTY: The 2007 Extraordinary Student Awards were presented at a May 2 banquet to six undergraduate and two graduate students who have continued their college education despite such challenges as physical and learning disabilities, family tragedy, and political and social turmoil.

K-STATE GEOGRAPHY STUDENTS PRESENT AT RECENT ASSOCIATION OF AMERICAN GEOGRAPHERS MEETING: Students from the geography department at Kansas State University presented posters and papers recently at the 103rd annual meeting of the Association of American Geographers in San Francisco.

K-STATE MAKING SPECIAL ARRANGEMENTS FOR STUDENTS IMPACTED BY STORMS: It is finals week at Kansas State University, but for many students exams are not at the top of their list of concerns.

MINNEAPOLIS RESIDENT WINS PRESTIGIOUS NATIONAL FELLOWSHIP: A Kansas State University senior in secondary education is one of up to 50 winners of a 2007 James Madison Memorial Fellowship. The fellowship funds up to $24,000 of each Fellow's course of study toward a master's degree in American history, political science or education.

K-STATE SOIL JUDGING TEAM TAKES NATIONAL HONORS: Kansas State University's Soil Judging Team won second place at the 2007 National Soil Judging Contest in Logan, Utah.

K-STATE STUDENTS BUILDING HOUSE THAT RELIES SOLELY ON SOLAR POWER FOR NATIONAL CONTEST: The special house the K-State group is building is for the 2007 Solar Decathlon, an international competition that challenges university-based teams to design and construct a two-person home powered exclusively by the sun.

K-STATE AFRICAN STUDIES CENTER BRINGING ISSUES OF THE CONTINENT TO KANSAS: K-State's E. Wayne Nafziger, Emizet F. Kisangani and David C. Hartnett have established an African Studies Center at K-State, with a focus on "Africa in the Global Context: The Political Economy of Agriculture, the Environment, and Human Health."

K-STATE TO OFFER STREAM CHANNEL FIELD COURSE IN WYOMING: Kansas State University is offering the workshop, Stream Channel Field Course: Mapping and Assessment of Natural Stream Channels, July 23-27 in Sheridan, Wyo.

K-STATE DEVELOPING SCHOLAR FINDS SUCCESS ON AND OFF CAMPUS: Sammy Ornelas is taking the word "involved" to a new level. A former Marine, Ornelas, senior in kinesiology at Kansas State University, currently serves in the Kansas Army National Guard, is president of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc., is a McNair Scholar and is a member of K-State's Developing Scholars Program.

K-STATE TO OFFER GRANT WRITING COURSE THROUGH DISTANCE EDUCATION: Kansas State University will offer the distance education course, "Grant Writing: Finding the Elusive Dollar," EDACE 786, for the fall 2007 semester.

K-STATE DIVISION OF CONTINUING EDUCATION FORMS ALUMNI ADVISORY COMMITTEE: Kansas State University's Division of Continuing Education has a long track record of award-winning programs in adult and distance education. Now K-State will continue to solidify its position as one of the leading programs in the country with what is believed to be the first distance education Alumni Advisory Committee, made up of former off-campus and distance education students.

K-STATE INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS EARN AWARDS, SCHOLARSHIP MONEY FOR ENTRIES ON THEME OF RESPONSIBLE STEWARDSHIP: Kansas State University interior architecture and product design students earned two of three 2006-2007 honor awards given by the Northern California chapter of the International Interior Design Association.

K-STATE RECOGNIZING MORE THAN 110 STUDENTS FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE WITH MEMBERSHIP IN PHI KAPPA PHI HONORARY SOCIETY: Kansas State University's chapter of Phi Kappa Phi is welcoming more than 110 new members.

K-STATE ENTOMOLOGIST SAYS STATE'S BEE POPULATION SO FAR HAS AVOIDED 'COLONY COLLAPSE DISORDER': A mysterious die-off of the nation's honeybee population hasn't spread to Kansas yet, says Kansas State University entomologist Sharon Dobesh, who attributes that luck to the hobbyist nature of most hives in the state.

K-STATE AGRI-MARKETING TEAM WINS NATIONAL COMPETITION: The Kansas State University National Agri-Marketing Association student team won the 2007 National Agri-Marketing Competition, finishing first for the second straight year.

K-STATE GEOGRAPHY PROFESSOR AWARDED FULBRIGHT-HAYS GRANT: Bimal Paul, K-State professor of geography, along with two professors from other schools, has been awarded a $64,000 Fulbright-Hays grant for the project, "Natural Hazards and Related Health Issues in Bangladesh: Standards and Issues Based Geography Curricular Project for Grades K-16."

K-STATE ASSISTANT DEAN OF AGRICULTURE NAMED NATIONAL PRESIDENT OF DIVERSITY ORGANIZATION: Zelia Wiley, assistant dean of diversity at Kansas State University's College of Agriculture, has been named the national president of Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences, a professional organization.

TWO K-STATE ARCHITECTURAL ENGINEERING STUDENTS RECEIVE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 2007-2008 SCHOOL YEAR: Kansas State University architectural engineering students Jennifer Lybarger and Susan Nagel have been awarded scholarships by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers for the 2007-2008 school year.

K-STATE'S PINNACLE HONOR SOCIETY WELCOMES MORE THAN 50 NEW MEMBERS: Kansas State University's chapter of the Pinnacle Honor Society gained more than 50 new members at an induction reception April 23.

K-STATE STUDENTS TAKE PART IN DANCE STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Kansas State University students had the special opportunity to perform in a dance show choreographed exclusively by K-State students.

KURT BARNHART TO BECOME NEW DEPARTMENT OF AVIATION HEAD FOR K-STATE AT SALINA: Following a national search, R. Kurt Barnhart has been named head of Kansas State University at Salina's aviation department. He will start his new position in July.

K-STATE STUDENTS' ARTWORK SELECTED FOR COMMERCE BANK EXHIBITION: Artwork by several Kansas State University students was selected for the recent annual Commerce Bank Student Comprehensive Exhibition.

K-STATE STUDENTS JOIN NATIONAL FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES HONOR SOCIETY: Several students from Kansas State University were recently initiated into the Alpha Chi chapter of Phi Upsilon Omicron.

K-STATE CHEERLEADERS COMPETE IN NATIONAL CHEER COMPETITION: K-State cheerleaders competed at the National Cheerleaders Association Collegiate Nationals April 3-7 in Daytona Beach, Fla. The squad finished eighth in finals after finishing seventh in preliminaries.

K-STATE PRESENTING DEGREES TO MORE THAN 2,600 STUDENTS: More than 2,600 students are candidates to receive degrees from Kansas State University. Commencement ceremonies are Saturday, May 5, for K-State at Salina; and Friday, May 11, and Saturday, May 12, on the K-State campus in Manhattan.

K-STATE PROFESSOR WORKS TO CREATE COOPERATIVE ROBOT TEAMS TO HANDLE HAZARDOUS JOBS: Searching buildings for weapons of mass destruction and supply routes for improvised bombs are extremely dangerous but important jobs. That's why Scott DeLoach is working to create robots and robot teams to handle these and other tasks.

K-STATE STUDENT SELECTED FOR INTERNSHIP WITH NATIONAL GEOSPATIAL-INTELLIGENCE AGENCY: Nicole Wayant, a junior in mathematics and geography at Kansas State University, has been selected for a summer internship with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, headquartered in Washington, D.C.

K-STATE STUDENTS EARN AWARDS AT ANNUAL S. THOMAS PARK MATHEMATICAL COMPETITION: A student from Overland Park has won Kansas State University's ninth annual S. Thomas Parker Mathematical Competition. William Carlson, a mathematics major, won first place in the March 31 competition and received a $300 award.

FOOD DEFENSE COURSE OFFERED MAY 21-22 AT K-STATE: Kansas State University will offer Principles of Food Defense for the Food Industry, FDSCI 630, May 21-22 as a part of K-State's May intersession. The one-credit course will be on the Manhattan campus.

K-STATE RESEARCHERS RECEIVE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION GRANT TO STUDY THE EVOLUTION OF DEVELOPMENT: Three Kansas State University researchers in the Division of Biology have received a $420,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to study the evolution of genetic mechanisms controlling developmental fate.
