First brought to worldwide popularity through Paul Simon’s “Graceland” album, this 10 member Grammy-winning a cappella ensemble marries the intricate rhythms and harmonies of their native South African musical traditions to the sounds and sentiments of gospel music. The result is sheer joy!
The ensemble borrows from a traditional music called isicathamiya (is-cot-a-ME-ya), which developed in the mines of South Africa, where black workers were taken by rail to work far away from their homes and families. When the miners returned to the homelands, this musical tradition returned with them.
After the Graceland recording, the group’s internationally recognized sound was further popularized by their award-winning Life Savers and 7UP commercials, the Lion King II soundtrack, and their many collaborations with such artists as Sir Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart, Josh Groban, and Phil Collins.
