Academic Mentoring
Through the Academic Mentoring program, students
provide academic assistance and serve as mentors for young Kansas
school students, grades K-12, with special academic or personal
needs. Mentors may receive either hourly compensation or a modest
scholarship for their service. To apply, complete the Academic Mentoring Application.
Alternative Breaks
Alternative Breaks is an opportunity for students to participate
in an intense service experience during their spring break. Participants
travel to communities where they work with local residents to address
a pressing social issue. Recent trips have included AIDS Services of Dallas,
Stand up for Kids in Denver, CO, and Katrina Relief efforts in New Orleans,
LA.
AmeriCorps at K-State
The School of Leadership Studies is the site of an AmeriCorps *State program called Careers for the Common Good (CCG). This AmeriCorps program is funded through an AmeriCorps*Kansas grant and designed to engage college students who are interested or involved in teacher education, health services and nonprofit career fields. The program seeks to graduate a new generation of professional in career fields who are committed to putting their skills and knowledge to use in Kansas communities for the public good.
Good Neighbors Program
The Good Neighbors Program focuses on building and maintaining positive relationships in neighborhoods around the university. Neighboring activities are in collaboration with the City of Manhattan and Neighborhood Associations are range from neighborhood cleanups to community service projects to social events.
International Service Teams
International Service Teams provide eight to ten weeks of service to developing
communities around the world during the summer break. Interdisciplinary
student teams work with the community to plan and implement service projects
during their stay. Over the past 17 years, international teams have served
communities worldwide by creating community-specific plans and projects
focused on health, education, environmental concerns and other development
issues. Students selected to participate on a team complete a three-credit
course during spring semester in preparation of their summer service.
First Tee Life Skills and Leadership Academy
First Tee is a national junior golf program designed to provide professional
golf instruction to youth who may not ordinarily have the opportunity.
The First Tee National Academy is held each summer at Colbert Hills Golf
Course, home to the Earl Woods National Youth Golf Academy.
The academy provides youth ages 13-17 with instruction in leadership
development, life skills, and golf from professionals from across the
country. K-State students work with the academy participants as their
Academy Coaches. Apply to be an Academy Counselor and work with academy
participants as mentors.
K-State Volunteer Center of Manhattan
The K-State Volunteer Center of Manhattan promotes civic learning, leadership and service on campus and in the Greater Manhattan community. The Volunteer Center coordinates and promotes campus-community volunteer and service events through Seasons of Service and Weekly Volunteer Opportunities, provides learning opportunities through Volunteer Leadership workshops, service recognition as part of our Celebrating People in Action annual celebration and support civic leadership development through practices as part of our HandsOn Program.
