Summer 2004 Host Site Descriptions
Izamal, Mexico
Established in 1994, this was our 10th year to send students to Izamal, Mexico. Students worked at a summer day camp teaching educational lessons such as planting trees, sanitation, culture, English, and personal development.
San Marcos, Guatemala
Students lived and worked alongside Mayans in the Highlands of Guatemala performing various tasks. Primary work was focused on educating the indigenous community about sustainable agriculture. Students also planted trees and installed stoves in the homes of the local indigenous Mayans.
Tampico, Mexico
Students planned multiple activities for English language learning at CASAN, a female home for troubled teens. They taught lessons on American culture, foods and nutrition, and other topics. For the first time, this site also sent students to assist in a local hospital with children suffering from various types of Cancer.
Istanbul, Turkey
This was a second year site in which the four students worked at various Diabetic Children’s Camps throughout the summer. The team also began another project working in a wellness center with adults who suffer from Cerebral Palsy, Istanbul’s Spastic Children Foundation. They also attended an “Alternative Camp” (sports camp) in Bodrum with the children.
Antigua, Guatemala
This was a first year site in which Guatemala took two separate teams for Antigua and San Marcos. This team worked with the non-profit agency: Seeds of Life establishing education for Mayan families and traveled to San Marcos to join forces with the team there to work on a wood-burning stove project for the indigenous. This team also spent some time working with and for an organization of local Mayan women. A budget should be established for this project to have a future.
