Summer 2003 Host Site Descriptions
Izamal, Mexico
Established in 1994, Izamal has been a continued success for international teams. Students worked at a summer day camp teaching educational lessons such as planting trees, sanitation, culture, English, and personal development.
San Marcos, Guatemala
Students lived and worked alongside Mayans in the Highlands of Guatemala performing various tasks. Primary work was focused on planting macademia nut trees and setting up a proper watering system to sustain their growth. Students also built a garden, assisted local doctors, and inspected surrounding NGOs for future service opportunities.
Tampico, Mexico
Students planned multiple activities for English language learning at CASAN, a female home for troubled teens. They taught lessons on American culture, foods and nutrition, and other topics. This project could use supplemental activities to fill time.
Istanbul, Turkey
This was a first year site in which the two students worked at various children’s camps throughout the summer. It was hoped that the team could provide services at a diabetic ward in a hospital in Istanbul, but it unfortunately wasn’t needed once they arrived. There is great capacity for expanding this project next year.
Villarrica, Paraguay
This project centered around a school for mentally and physically disabled children in the Villarrica area. The team planned and organized activities for the children using games, arts & crafts, and other creative methods to provide a fun learning environment. The team worked in the school’s administration as well as in the classroom. Additional services were provided at an intercity children’s facility.

Candi Hironaka believes that what we do and who we are here at the School of Leadership Studies is a story that needs to be shared. “The sense of an inclusive community where everyone is valued and respected is at the heart of Leadership Studies!” Sharing our understanding of a learning community affirms for our students, our faculty, and our campus and community partners the value of our work, and the positive difference we can and are making in the world.
