Summer 2002 Host Site Descriptions
Izamal, Mexico
Students served for 10 weeks with the Yucatan Cultural Foundation in their summer day camp for local children. They taught lessons on a series of topics such as proper placement of trash, typical Mexican dress and Mayan heritage, trees of the Yucatan, and how to be creative and self-starters. The summer ended with a presentation for the parents to see what the children had learned.
Tampico, Mexico
Team of female students worked at CASAN, a group home for troubled female teens aged 11-18. Students taught English classes, cultural classes, and organized various activities to promote a strong learning environment.
San Pedro, Belize
Team of KSU students aided in hurricane relief, continued building a greenhouse begun by last year’s team, and collected and transported medical supplies from the US to Belize.
Punta Gorda, Belize
Students worked with an NGO in Punta Gorda, Belize, where they taught English, Math, and science at Toledo Community College.
Jacunda, Brazil
Students worked with project P.R.A.Y. in a small community in the Amazon. The team performed various tasks at the orphanage including childcare, facility maintenance, and building a shed and small garden. Some of the students helped in a medical clinic assisting with minor needs.
