Summer 2001 Host Site Descriptions
Sarajevo, Bosnia
Team worked with Bjevale Children’s Home in Sarajevo, Bosnia. They developed arts/creativity programs to help children express through art their feelings and emotions as a form of therapy.
Amman, Jordan
Volunteers worked with the Jordanian Hashemite Fund for Human Development. They worked in two centers teaching English to children as part of a summer program.
Ambergris Caye, Belize
Team worked on researching and developing possible future sites.
Izamal, Mexico
Volunteers worked with the Yucatan Cultural Foundation in their summer day camp for local children. They educated the children on a variety of topics such as human development, Mayan history, the environment, and community service. A few small day trips were planned to take the children to the zoo and capital city (Merida). Additional activities were held to bring the children in contact with community members along with a presentation for the parents at the end of the summer.
Tampico, Mexico
Team of female students worked with a new project in Tampico called CASAN. CASAN is a home for 27 girls, ages 11-18 who come from troubled backgrounds such as physical and mental abusive, drug-addicted, alcoholic, and prostitute parents. The team taught English classes 4 times a week, developed an informational presentation on good parenting, and designed a multi-purpose activity center for future use (plan included).
Kamba Kua, Paraguay
The team conducted a census and data analysis of the community to help track international donors and institutes specializing in community development and cultural preservation. Students were also responsible for teaching a few members basic computer skills and Internet training.
Chongqing, China
Volunteers worked in Chongqing assisting with the English program of the university and of the community. There was also the possibility of architecture or urban planning projects; this would have been a joint effort of the International
Team and university students.
