Summer 2000 Host Site Descriptions
Sarajevo, Bosnia
The team worked with the Bjelave Children’s Home in Sarajevo, Bosnia. Aside from daily daycare activities, they developed arts/creativity programs to help children express through art their feelings and emotions as a form of therapy.
Amman, Jordan
Team worked with the Jordanian Hashemite Fund for Human Development. They worked in two centers teaching English to children as a part of a summer program.
Phidim, Nepal
Two female volunteers worked in the Mechi English School in Phidim, Nepal, a small, private school for children. They also conducted teacher education workshops for the staff of the school.
Ambergris Caye, Belize (Belize Rural South Team)
Team worked with Belize Rural South assisting with tourism ideas and developing a summer education program on the island.
Ambergris Caye, Belize (Greenreaf Team)
The team worked with the Greenreaf Project to develop bird sanctuaries on two neighboring islands, assisting with plant/tree identification and counting crocodiles.
Tampico, Mexico
Volunteers worked with a local orphanage, Fray Andres de Olmos, developing projects to encourage children to express their emotions in creative ways. The orphanage was made up of children aged 6-13, and functioned as a learning center offering lessons on math, science, dance and English. They also worked at a summer day camp at the Tec de Monterrey, which served approximately 200 children (4-12).
Izamal, Mexico
Volunteers worked at the Yucatan Cultural Foundation with their summer camp program for local children. They educated the children on a variety of topics such as the environment and community service.
Arenol Volcano National Park - Alajuela, Costa Rica
Volunteers worked with the Arenol Volcano National Park at the Alberque La Catarata Ecotourist Lodge. Students classified butterflies, plants, flowers, and worked with the nearby “Waterfall” to promote tourism.
Cuidad Quesada - Alajuela, Costa Rica
This team worked at a local private school teaching English and Arts & Crafts. The school offered Kindergarten through 6th grade, students were 5-14 yrs. old. The team had no assistance and little resources, but found ways to reach the children through various activities. They also worked in the administrative office and helping with extracurricular activities.
