Summer 1999 Host Site Descriptions

Bosnia

The team consisted of five volunteers who worked on a needs assessment/inventory of the existing children’s programs in and around Sarejevo. They also developed arts/creativity programs to help the children express their feelings and emotions through art as a form of therapy. Additionally, they produced a video documentation of the needs of the community, children, and existing programs.

Jordan

Four volunteers worked with the Queen Alia Fund for Social Development. They were based in two centers teaching English to women and children. They also aided in computer training, nutrition education and microenterprise.

Phidim, Nepal

Two volunteers worked in the Mechi English School, a small, private school for children in Phidim, Nepal. They helped the teachers improve their teaching methods and worked to create interest in English at an early age. A needs assessment was created through informal interviews with teachers, PCV, and other local officials.

Tampico, Mexico

Two volunteers evaluated tourism services and economic feasibility of building an aquarium for the city. They also teamed up with Monterrey Tec students at a local orphanage (Fray Andres De Olmos) where they taught English and organized various activities for the children.

Izamal, Mexico

Four volunteers worked with the Yucatan Cultural Foundation in their summer camp program for local children. The camp ran three two-week sessions and served approximately 300 children, aging between 5-13 yrs. old. They educated the children on a variety of topics such as human values, environment, English, community service, manual arts, etc.

Costa Rica

Volunteers worked in the Arenol Volcano National Park in Costa Rica. They worked on developing a nature trail through the park and also planned and implemented environmental education for the park visitors. Volunteers classified insects, butterflies, and trees and built a database with the information they collected.

Ciudad Quesada, Costa Rica

Students worked at Silor, an office for the mentally and physically disabled, and an elementary school called Los Angeles. At Silor, Carolyn aided in Speech Therapy. At the elementary school, they taught basic English classes to children K-6. They also offered a weekly community English class for all others who were interested in learning.

Paraguay

Four volunteers worked alongside local government workers of two towns in Paraguay regarding environmental issues. Volunteers conducted surveys and wrote reports about the district in the state of respect to the environment. They also worked with the children of the communities on environmental education. This project is a continuation of last year’s efforts in Paraguay, which consisted of moving the city’s land fill site to a more suitable location.
