Summer 1998 Host Site Descriptions
Michoacan, Mexico
Two students participated in a regional project involving the evaluation of microenterprise efforts in three communities. Their aim was to help plan feasible small business opportunities to boost the local economy.
Izamal, Mexico
Four students worked in a summer camp for approximately 300 community children. They taught Ecology, English, Recreation, Community Service, and Manual Arts. The camp theme was “Nuestro Mundo” and focused on environmental awareness. The team also worked with the community on setting up a composting system.
El Papaturro, El Salvador
Two students worked on a community project designed by the people of El Papaturro. The project included working with community children on nutrition and general education as well as construction.
Los Chavalitos, Nicaragua
Two students worked with a rural orphanage on creating gardens and helping in school. The orphanage desired to be more self-sustaining; sweet corn, tomatoes, carrots, beats, and melons were planted. The team also spent time assessing the needs of the orphanage and developed project proposals for future teams.
Piribebuy, Paraguay
Volunteers worked with the local government to develop a waste disposal system and recycling center. They also worked with the community on environmental awareness.
Amman, Jordan
Four students worked with the Queen Alia Fund for Social Development on a project involving teaching women and children English and evaluating markets.
