Summer 1997 Host Site Descriptions
El Calabozo, Mexico
Students conducted a needs assessment of the community’s felt needs and problems, to plan for future summer projects. They evaluated the impact of recently received electricity, and served alongside a technical team traveling to several communities in the region to allow for broader assessment. They also worked on smaller projects involving nutrition and education.
El Papaturro, El Salvador
El Papaturro is a new site for the Community Service Program. The students worked on an extensive needs assessment of the community with the help of Cripdes and Sister Cities in order to form a foundation for future projects. Part of their project included working with the community’s school teacher in forming new strategies.
Tampico, Mexico
Tampico is a new site for the Community Service Program. These students worked with the local government and ITESM-campus Tampico on a project involving tourism. They researched new marketing strategies and consumer populations.
Izamal, Mexico
(Fourth year running.) Students teamed up with Fundacion workers to serve at their educational summer camp for local children. Children attending the day camp were typically abused and neglected, ranging from 1st to 6th grade. The camp served over 240 children and centered on environmental awareness. Subjects taught by these students included: ecology, Mayan History, community service, manual arts, recreation, and English. Students resided in a house sponsored by the Fundacion.
Amman, Jordan
This is the third year that the Community Service Program has placed a team in Amman. The students worked on a variety of projects including: English education, agriculture, and microenterprise.
