Summer 1995 Host Site Descriptions
El Calabozo and Patzcuaro, Michoacan Mexico
Nestled in the rolling hills of the state of Michoacan, Mexico, the small rural village of El Calabozo welcomed the team for eight weeks. With a population of about 360, the town’s agricultural economic base has suffered from poverty, isolation and lack of education. El Calabozo has no indoor plumbing, running water or electricity. Working with Dr. Guillermo Gonzalez and the Colegio de Postraduados, the group planned to address a variety of agricultural and nutrition related issues. They hosted workshops for the community on nutrition, sanitation, good hygienic practices, and basic health care. Other activities included examining corn production, increasing production of vegetables for personal consumption and commercial enterprise, and improving preventative veterinary practices.
San Juan Bautista, Paraguay
Students worked to produce a comprehensive community assessment, including analysis of the local business environment, government and social services available. The group studied the quantity and quality of area housing. A map of the community was created. Also, the team worked with students from the College of Architecture in Asuncion. Together, they initiated a contest among students to design a youth center for San Juan Bautista.
Izamal, Yucatan Mexico
Located in the heart of the Yucatan peninsula, the Mayan town of Izamal welcomed the team for eight weeks. With a population of about 21,000, Izamal sought to improve the education of its children. The Kansas group continued the second annual curso de verano, co-established by the 1994 CSP team and Leticia Roche of the Fundacion Cultural Yucatan. This summer day camp was offered three times in two-week sessions to reach over 270 children. The students taught topics such as English, culture, manual arts, nature, recreation, and community service. High School students from the Izamal area assisted with the camp. Additional workshops for both the children and the community adults demonstrated sanitation and good hygienic practices.
Amman, Jordon
This team has undertaken various projects as defined by the Jordanian organization. This summer they worked with women’s groups and a children’s day camp, instructing how to handle emergencies and manintain a safe environment. Another project helped to improve the lot area of ranchers. The team also served at the university in Amman to help establish a community service program.

Morgan is a senior majoring in public relations and believes “my major and minor were made for each other.” Morgan never planned to minor in Leadership Studies until a representative from the School of Leadership Studies Ambassadors visited her class to talk about the program. It sounded like an excellent opportunity to get involved with the school and University at-large. Click here to read more about this person.
