Several projects were undertaken, including constructing mud stoves (Lorena), starting a bovine project (Cintron), planting trees for reforestation (Schreiner and Skinner), work in the office of sponsored children (Gant), distribution of sports equipment donation, and microenterprise development.

Mary Tolar considers developing students as scholars and citizens the civic purpose of higher education, and essential to a vital democracy and a healthy society. Along with serving as Director of the School of Leadership Studies, Tolar also teaches Senior Seminar, directs the Coffman Leadership Institute, and partners often with K-State’s Institute for Discourse and Democracy and the Center for Engagement and Community Development.
