Spring Break 2008
Alternative Breaks is an opportunity for students to participate
in an intense service experience during their spring break. Participants
travel to communities around the country where they work with local residents to address
a pressing social issue.
Cumberland Trail Conference in Lafollette, TN
Seven students helped construct a part of the Cumberland Trail Corridor. The students helped carve their part of the trail by cutting into hillsides, building rock steps, and clearing limbs and brush from the trail.
Disciples Home Mission in Greensburg, KS
In Greensburg, Kansas, 9 students helped build the new home of an elderly citizen after her former home had been destroyed by the EF5 tornado that wiped out 95% of the town on May 4, 2007.
Little Village Boys & Girls Club in Chicago, IL
Eleven students used their creativity working with the Little Village Boys & Girls Club in Chicago, Illinois. Students spent the week putting on various workshops and tournaments for youth as well as helped prepare for a trivia challenge against another Boys & Girls Club.
AIDS Services of Dallas in Dallas, TX
Six students traveled to Dallas, Texas where they worked with AIDS Services of Dallas for the fifth year. Students were involved in a variety of activities including landscaping the garden, organizing filing systems, and interacting with youth clientele.
St. Bernard Parish Animal Shelter in New Orleans, LA
10 students traveled to New Orleans to work with the St. Bernard Parish Animal Shelter. Students fed, walked, and played with the animals. They also rebuilt parts of the animal shelter that were in need of repair after the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina.
Disciples Home Mission in New Orleans, LA
10 students traveled to New Orleans to assist with Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. The students worked on two homes that were being reconstructed.
The Green Project in New Orleans, LA
10 students worked with the Green Project to recycle and reuse building supplies and construction materials at low costs in the New Orleans area.

Through Leadership Studies Careem was connected with his summer internship with Cargill Inc, which led to his career at Cargill now. The Leadership Studies program gave Careem the chance to work directly with many diverse individuals, which he feels reflects the world of the future.
