Spring Break 2007
Alternative Breaks is an opportunity for students to participate
in an intense service experience during their spring break. Participants
travel to communities around the country where they work with local residents to address
a pressing social issue.
Hostelling International in Chicago, IL
In Chicago, ten students served in a city that is known for it's rich and diverse history in social service. Working through Hostelling International Chicago, students volunteered with several agencies that address specific social issues such as hunger, homelessness, and child advocacy. The social service agencies where the team worked are Children's Advocacy Room, Jane Addams Hull House, Chicago Food Depository, Deborah's Place, Inspiration Cafe.
Camp Restore in New Orleans, LA
During Spring Break, the third team of K-State students traveled to New Orleans to help with the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. The 2007 Spring Break team, comprised of forty-nine students, partnered with Camp Restore, a faith-based organization helping New Orleans area homeowners restore their homes.
AIDS Services of Dallas in Dallas, TX
In Dallas, thirteen students worked with AIDS Services of Dallas for the fifth consecutive year. AIDS Services of Dallas (ASD) is a nonprofit organization that provides medically supportive housing to low-income persons and families impacted by HIV/AIDS. Because ASD is a non-profit organization, it is very dependent upon the support of volunteers to accomplish its goals. The Community Service Program is excited to continue this established partnership.
Habitat for Humanity in Omaha, NE
Five K-State students traveled to Omaha, Nebraska to serve with Habitat for Humanity through their Collegiate Challenge
program.
Although the K-State Community Service Program has worked with Habitat for Humanity in the past, this was the first year working in Omaha.
