Spring Break 2005
Alternative Breaks is an opportunity for students to participate
in an intense service experience during their spring break. Participants
travel to communities around the country where they work with local residents to address
a pressing social issue.
Hostelling International in Chicago, IL
In Chicago, students served in a city that is known for it's rich and diverse history in social service. Each day, students volunteered with a different agency that addresses a specific social issue (i.e. hunger, homelessness, child advocacy, etc.) in an effort to understand the various local needs and concerns of different neighborhoods and communities. Students servde at the following agencies during their visit: The Children's Advocacy Room, Jane Addams Hull House, Chicago Food Depository, Deborah's Place, Inspiration Cafe.
AIDS Services of Dallas in Dallas, TX
In Dallas, students worked with AIDS Services of Dallas for the third year. K-State Alternative Spring Breaks Teams served at this site in 2003 and 2004. AIDS Services of Dallas (ASD) is a nonprofit organization that provides medically supportive housing to low-income persons and families impacted by HIV/AIDS. Because they are a non-profit organization, ASD is very dependent upon the support of volunteers to accomplish goals. The Community Service Program is excited to continue this established partnership.
Habitat for Humanity in Waterloo, IA
Ten K-State students traveled to Waterloo, Iowa for the week of March
21-27 to serve with Habitat for Humanity's Collegiate Challenge
program. The Waterloo Habitat chapter had already built 35 homes in
their 15 years of existence. The K-State group, along with teams from
the University of Chicago and Northwestern University, helped build the
organization’s 36th and 37th homes.
