"Effective at the start of the 2006-07 academic year, each Regents institution shall have in place policies and procedures requiring that all incoming students residing in student housing be vaccinated for meningitis. Such policies shall include appropriate waiver procedures for those who refuse to take the vaccine" (9-15-05). Board of Regents of the State of Kansas
The vaccine recommended is the MCV4 or quadrivalent conjugate vaccine covering strains A,C,Y, and W 135 of Neisseria Meningitidis for compliance with this regulation.
CDC recommends a meningococcal vaccine booster (MCV4) for all incoming students living in on-campus housing dormitories. Being a college student residing in university housing is an added risk factor. If the first dose (or series) is given before the 16th birthday, a booster is needed. If you are a student and have already sent in the meningococcal vaccination form but your vaccination was given before your 16th birthday, it will not be considered effective to protect you from contracting certain forms of bacterial meningitis for the entire academic year. Therefore, you are required by the university to be given a booster dose of meningococcal vaccine (MCV4) or sign a waiver declining this booster by the end of August for students admitted for fall semester or by the end of January for students admitted spring semester entering on-campus housing. Read the housing contract for Kansas State University policy. Print and complete a Meningococcal Vaccine Documentation form.
*The Meningococcal B vaccine does NOT apply to this policy and cannot be used as a substitute for the MCV4 vaccine.
