Compact Everyday-Carry Wireless Health Monitoring Device with Customizable Sensor Configurations

Countless people would benefit from everyday-carry devices that allow them to monitor their health, but current product offerings are limited and are hindered by size, price, functionality, and performance. In response, researchers at Kansas State University have developed a hand-held wireless health monitoring device whose small size and customizability make it ideally suited to ambulatory health monitoring.

This cuboid-shaped device (“GumPack”) is about the size of a pack of gum, and each of its surfaces can host a medical device. The primary surface component is a board that coordinates medical device communication and processes on-board sensor data. Remaining surface components are plug-and-play devices matched to patient needs. The GumPack can communicate wirelessly with wearable sensors (“Chiclets”) to form a body area network. Medical data can be viewed on a small LCD screen or uploaded wirelessly via Wi-Fi or through a cabled connection (USB or HDMI) to a cell phone or to a host system that maintains electronic patient records for physician review.

This medical device offers communication and processing capabilities consistent with emerging smart phones, and it supports on-the-fly device reconfigurability at a much lower potential cost relative to ambulatory medical devices that are less capable.
