K-State has an active program to facilitate technology licensing and transfer (commercialization) of intellectual property developed by University faculty, staff and students. This process is facilitated through a partnership between the Kansas State University Research Foundation (KSURF) and the Kansas State University Institute for Commercialization (KSU-IC). KSURF has the responsibility for managing the intellectual property portfolio of the University with KSU-IC serving as KSURF's commercialization agent.
There are many ways to identify potential licensees, but the most successful contacts frequently come from the creator. Some common methods of identification at the creator's disposal are conferences where the creator has presented the invention, knowledge of companies working in the field and scientific colleagues who can champion the inventions within their companies. The most successful licensing ventures end in the formation of a partnership with the licensee that can lead to other collaborative or licensing possibilities.
