SERVICE
Members of the historically Black Greek-Letter organizations demonstrate
tremendous personal commitment and individual involvement in community
service projects that have been the cornerstone of these organizations
since their conception. Active members become personally involved in
these community service projects, mainly because these projects meet the
needs and issues that are relevant to the survival of the African-American
community.

SUPPORT
Another positive aspect of membership of historically Black Greek-Letter
fraternities and sororities, especially at predominantly white
institutions, is the support received for those seeking solace from
racism, racial tension, and social injustice. Belonging to a historically
Black Greek-Letter organization gives the African-American student a sense
of belonging, a sense of a family away from home.

SOCIAL INTERACTION
Historically Black Greek-Letter fraternities and sororities also provide
the climate for social interaction and inclusion. Involvement allows the
African-American student to create his or her own social and cultural
network, to remedy exclusion from the predominantly white university
community. Students develop best in environments where they feel valued,
protected, accepted, and socially connected with people with similar
backgrounds and similar interests and ideas.

FRIENDSHIP
One of the biggest benefits of involvement is the deep feelings of
friendship with fellow members, known as "Brotherhood" and
"Sisterhood." The students are seen as real brothers and
sisters. Bonding first takes place through the intake process, as they
learn the history and traditions of the fraternity or sorority.

INTERNATIONAL AFFILIATION
Students bond with fraternity brothers and sorority sisters from other
chapters all over the country as well. Members learn the history and
traditions of the fraternity or sorority that all chapters in a national
fraternity or sorority share. When an African-American student who
belongs to a historically Black Greek-Letter fraternity or sorority visits
another university, their fraternity brothers or sorority sisters share
this bond. It feels like one big family, no matter the university or
college of origin.

LIFETIME COMMITMENT
The bond that is shared between fraternity and sorority members lasts a
lifetime and it progresses past the undergraduate experience. After
graduation, members of a historically Black Greek-Letter organizations
remain active with graduate and alumni chapters. Graduate or
Alumni/Alumnae chapters, are active and influential in their communities
and they are influential upon the undergraduate chapters on university
campuses nation-wide. Graduate or Alumni/Alumnae chapters, also provide a
means of
professional networking and publish directories and newsletters providing
professional connections.

GIVING BACK
One important goal for members
of historically Black Greek-Letter organizations is to acquire knowledge
and use our knowledge to help our African-American communities. Finally,
it is necessary to pass that knowledge on to our youth so that they may be
equipped with the tools to survive and succeed in the world.
