Professor and Department Head, Department of Hospitality Management and DieteticsDr. Deb Canter came to K-State as a faculty member in 1977 after completing her PhD in Food Systems Administration at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She served as Director of the Coordinated Program in Dietetics from 1988 until she was named Graduate Program Director in 2000. She assumed the role of Department Head in 2004. Dr. Canter was recognized by the Carnegie Foundation as the CASE Professor of the Year for Kansas in 1991, by the American Dietetic Association with the Award for Excellence in the Practice of Dietetic Education in 1997 and with a Medallion Award in 2002. She is active in numerous professional, church, and community organizations, is an avid dachshund lover, and is known far and wide for her cheesecakes and love of all things culinary.
Associate Professor, Department of Hospitality Management and DieteticsDr. Betsy Barrett joined the HMD faculty in 1993 after she received her PhD at Kansas State University. Prior to coming to KSU, Dr. Barrett taught at the University of Alabama in the Department of Human Nutrition and Hospitality Management and was employed by Morrison’s Management Services as chief dietitian and foodservice director. Dr. Barrett is Director of the Didactic Program in Dietetics, advises hospitality management, dietetic and graduate students and has served on numerous committees for the department, college and university. She is a member of the American Dietetic Association, CHRIE, PCMA, National Restaurant Association, and American School Foodservice Association.
Associate Professor and Certified Financial Planner Program Director, School of Family Studies and Human Services
Dr. John Grable, CFP®, RFC holds the Vera Mowery McAninch Professor of Human Development and Family Studies professorship at Kansas State University. He received his undergraduate degree in economics and business from the University of Nevada, an MBA from Clarkson University, and a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech. He is the Certified Financial Planners Board of Standards Inc. and International Association of Registered Financial Consultants registered undergraduate and graduate program director at Kansas State University. Teams of undergraduate financial planning students mentored by Dr. Grable have won the National Collegiate Financial Planning Championship in 2000, 2003, 2005 and 2006. Dr. Grable also serves as the director of The Institute of Personal Financial Planning at K-State. Prior to entering the academic profession he worked as a pension/benefits administrator and later as a Registered Investment Advisor in an asset management firm. Dr. Grable serves as the editor for the Journal of Personal Finance, a rigorous peer-reviewed research journal. His research interests include financial risk-tolerance assessment, financial planning help-seeking behavior, and financial wellness assessment. He has been the recipient of several research and publication awards and grants, and is active in promoting the link between research and financial planning practice where he has published more than 60 refereed papers. Dr. Grable served on the Board of Directors of the International Association of Registered Financial Consultants (IARFC), as Treasure for the American Council on Consumer Interests (ACCI), and on the Research Advisory Council of the Take Charge America Institute (TCAI) for Consumer Education and Research at University of Arizona. In 2004 he won the prestigious Cato Award for Distinguished Journalism in the Field of Financial Services, and in 2006 he was honored with the IARFC Founders Award.
Professor, Extension Specialist, School of Family Studies and Human ServicesEsther M. Maddux, Ph.D., CFP® is the Personal Financial Planning Graduate Certificate Program Director. She teaches Fundamentals of Financial Planning and Professional Practices in Personal Financial Planning in the GPIDEA Master’s Degree Program. She supervises the field study practicum for the Master’s Degree Program. She designs educational curriculum for the K-State Research & Extension Kansas Saves initiative. She has worked as an advisor for a large financial services corporation and has had an independent, fee-only financial planning practice.
Assistant Professor, Director K-State Center on AgingGayle Doll’s primary goals as director of the Center on Aging have been centered on students. In the past few years under her leadership the number of students enrolled in the secondary major has more than doubled. Course offerings have been expanded and student support services have been increased. In research, the Center has become renowned for its work in changing the culture of nursing homes to become more person-centered. Staff concentrate on developing materials and training that improve the ability of nursing home staff to provide care that meets all resident needs. In more recent years this has included sexuality. In addition to these responsibilities, Doll is active in community and state programs that promote successful aging. She has received a Commerce Bank teaching award and speaks extensively in state and national forums.

Professor and Apparel, Textiles, & Interior Design Department HeadJana Hawley is Professor and Department Head for Apparel Textiles and Interior Design. She earned her Ph.D. at the University of Missouri in Human Environmental Sciences with an emphasis in Textile and Apparel Management and her Masters from Oklahoma State University in Clothing and Textiles. Her bachelor’s degree is from Fort Hays State University. She has been on faculty at Indiana University, the University of North Texas, and returned to the University of Missouri in 2001 where she taught Textiles and E-Commerce related subjects. Dr. Hawley was trained in cultural anthropology and uses cultural theory and qualitative analyses in her research. Her scholarship focuses on a systems analysis of textile recycling but she has also published in the areas of E-Commerce the cultural aspects of the Old Order Amish. Dr. Hawley has several outstanding teaching awards including UNT’s Pioneer Award for Teaching with Technology and MU’s Teaching with Technology Award and the prestigious Kemper Award for Excellence in Teaching. Dr. Hawley is a Fulbright Scholar to India and a Global Scholar to Thailand. She has also served as Advisor for the International Textile Recycling Conference in Japan. She serves as Vice President of Operations for the International Textiles and Apparel Association (ITAA). Jana is a Kansas native.
Assistant Professor, Apparel, Textiles, & Interior DesignJoy Kozar received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in apparel and textile marketing from Kansas State University. While working on her undergraduate education, she also completed a minor in business administration. In 2004, Kozar graduated with a Ph.D. in textiles and clothing from Iowa State University, where she received a minor in gerontology as part of her scholarship focus on older consumers. Dr. Kozar has experience teaching a variety of classes, including apparel and textile marketing, entrepreneurship, visual merchandising, principles of buying, globalization and apparel and textile trade, and consumer behavior. Her research endeavors center on three major areas, including consumer loyalty and purchasing behavior, particularly research on the older adult market segment; social and psychological aspects of dress and appearance, including topics examining social comparison and media and advertising influence on body image, satisfaction, and self-perception; and global issues in the production and distribution of apparel and textile goods, including topics related to social responsibility, labor exploitation in the production of goods, and governmental and industry responses to sweatshop concerns.
Associate Professor, Apparel, Textiles & Interior DesignDr. Melody L. A. LeHew received her B.S. and M.S. degrees in Textile and Clothing from The Ohio State University and her Ph.D. in Retail and Consumer Science from the University of Tennessee – Knoxville. Dr. LeHew’s scholarship program focuses on sustainable consumption; as well as the link between consumer behavior/preferences and retail strategy. Most recently, Dr LeHew received a USDA Challenge grant to develop educational materials that will enhance students’ understanding and practice of global citizenship as future leaders in the textile and apparel industry.

Professor and Extension Specialist, School of Family Studies and Human ServicesCharlotte Shoup Olsen has been an Extension Specialist at Kansas State University since 1993. Her primary role as an Extension specialist is to prepare research-based family strengthening programs for county/district Extension faculty to implement in their communities. Among Olsen’s more prominent Extension programs that she has created in collaboration with others are CoupleTALK, Stepping Stones for Stepfamilies, Family Change, Helping Farm Families Succeed in Business, and Women Managing the Farm. Recent programming efforts include a marriage curriculum that she co-authored specifically for Latino families and an online course to help professionals understand military family resilience. She was one of the original members of a working group on Extension relationship education that has evolved into the National Extension Relationship and Marital Extension Network of which she is on the executive team. Her background as a former Peace Corps volunteer in Africa and other diversity work informs her approach to being a family systems specialist. Olsen received her Ph.D. from Kansas State University and is a certified family life educator through the National Council on Family Relations.
