KS-AFS 2006 Meeting The 31st meetting of the KS Chapter AFS was held in Hays on 10-11 February, 2006. The meeting kicked off with a well-attended GIS workshop led by Joanna Whittier and Jesse Fischer on the Fort Hays campus.
After the workshop, activities moved to the Sternberg Museum of Natural History, where the business meeting was held in the late afternoon. Following the business meeting, everyone was able to stay at the museum for a barbecue supper and evening social. Registrants were able to visit with colleagues, view the museum exhibit area, view posters, and participate in a f The raffle and fish ID contest raised over $700 to support the activities of the student subsection. The K-State Student Subunit of the American Fisheries Society sold r t-shirts with an image of the Southern redbelly dace drawn by Joseph R. Tomelleri. See their new website if you are Attendees of the social/dinner also were privileged to view the numerous displays at the museum including an exhibit of cecropia moth paintings from Dr. John Cody. On Saturday morning, 11 oral presentations were given: 4 by post-graduates, 4 by graduate students, and 3 by undergraduate students.
Awards for presentations went to: Best Paper- Curtis Wolf. Recruitment in Three Freshwater Mussel Species (Unionidae) Correlated to Seasonal River Discharge. Best Poster- Phillip D. Brinkley. Effect of Fixative on Total Length of Small-Bodied Stream Fish. All in all, it was an excellent weekend of camaraderie among ichthyologists and fisheries biologists from across the state.
