National Volunteer Week, National & Global Youth Service Day & Earth Day!

Join our statewide April 15-22 celebration of volunteer service!

KsCC-member colleges & universities are answering the call to serve, learn and share by coordinating National & Global Youth Service Day projects for communities throughout Kansas. Some participating campuses include (but are not limited to) Kansas State University, Fort Hays State University, the University of Kansas, and the University of Saint Mary. Projects are being coordinated in Manhattan, Hays, Lawrence, Leavenworth, surrounding communities, and throughout the state of Kansas.

Join our KsCC AmeriCorps*VISTA, AmeriCorps*Kansas Campus-Community Youth Service Corps, student, faculty, staff, and community volunteers in a service project near you!

Wednesday, April 18 to Sunday, April 22 - Onaga Community Development Project
Constructing a handicap accessible playground for Havensville, Onaga, and Wheaton community youth.  K-State’s Civic Leadership will be providing transportation each day to Onaga. Friday, April 20 - National & Global Youth Service Day Kick-Off
There will be a Kickoff of Manhattan’s Community Celebration of National and Global Youth Service Day beginning at 9:30am at the City Park parking lot next to the pool. A Proclamation will be read, buttons will be distributed, and a special guest will congratulate and thank Manhattan youth for their participation and interest in the environment and reducing waste.

The Go Green Certification program will be handing out informational material for about its program hoping to encourage as many businesses and organizations to become “green” as they reduce, recycle, reuse, and respond to industrial waste. Youth are welcome to come any time from 9:30am to 3:00pm.

Beginning at 10:00am, children will be able to talk with staff from Waste Management, learn how trash is loaded, crushed, and unloaded, and get an opportunity to see their trucks up close. Howie’s Recycling will also have display of what cans, plastics, and glass look like after they are dropped off for recycling.

Friday, April 20 - After-School Alliance-School is OUT, Service is IN youth service projects
Beach Museum of Art - Workshop on recycling, and youths will be able to make posters(75-100 youth), Boys and Girls Club (30 youth), Manhattan Arts Center (20 youth), Northview After-School (15-20 youth), Sunset Zoo - Earth Day setup (15-20 youth), Wonder Workshop - Tuttle Creek Clean up (40 youth)

Saturday, April 21- Keep Kansas Clean-PRIDE Day of Service
Olsburg, Kansas will be one of the participating communities for the PRIDE Keep Kansas Clean project.  In the Manhattan area, volunteers will be cleaning the City Park and playground as well as helping older citizen with their yards.  K-State's Civic Leadership, 785-532-5701 or  ksuserve@ksu.edu , will be coordinating transportation for students and faculty/staff from 9:00am to 2:00pm to various rural communities throughout the morning and early afternoon.  Volunteers will be provided lunch by participating communities.  Let’s help revitalize rural communities surrounding our college campus!  

Saturday, April 21 - Willie’s Fun Zone
This youth oriented activity will occur from 11:00am to 5:30pm at the KSU indoor practice field prior to the 6:00pm KSU Spring Football game. They are seeking a lot of volunteers and will provide training and shifts to work the day.  The Athletic Department is still looking for a youth organization to help promote Manhattan’s National and Global Youth Service Day focus. Saturday, April 21 - Youth Impacting the Community
Manhattan High School students are planning the 9:00am to 3:00pm “Revitalize the Trails” service event. They are seeking 100 youth volunteers.  For more information, please contact Heather Landsdowne of the Manhattan Community Foundation at 785-587-8995.

Sunday, April 22 - Sunset Zoo-Earth Day Activities
The zoo has traditionally had activities for families to celebrate Earth Day and will host an all day event. Their Go Green initiative will be encouraging schools, classrooms and businesses to start recycling through the "Go Green Certification”.  They are encouraging classes/schools to adopt a business, registering community organizations to “Go Green” (recycle, reuse, reduce, and restore) and hope to provide the City Commissioners with a proposal to start curbside recycling.   The former taskforce chair (Judy Willingham, KSU Extension director for the Environmental Leadership Program) who submitted a previous curbside recycling proposal has offered to talk with anyone regarding that past proposal.

Sunday, April 22 - Nickelodeon-Let’s Just Play
Cox Communications and the City’s Parks and Recreation are the major sponsors. This half day event (12:00noon to 5:00pm) will take place in the City Park. The theme is to “empower kids to engage in active, healthy and fun play”.  Annie Timmons (atimmons@ksu.edu) is the coordinator of this event. She is asking for 150 Greek volunteers and anticipates 5000 people to participate.  Cox Communications will be running 50 TV spots a week beginning the 1st week in April.  There will be several news paper articles and the Greeks will be going to the schools and handing out leaflets.

Sunday, April 22 - Tuttle Creek Association-Helping Fish Habitat
The Tuttle Creek Association is looking for 15-20 volunteers to help set man-made fish habitat in the Tuttle Creek Reservoir from 9:00am to 12:00noon.  Transportation and lunch will be provided.  If you are interested in helping to preserve the “fish environment” contact the Community Service Program by phone at 785-532-5701 or by email at ksuserve@ksu.edu.  

 

 

Hays Community Celebration

Calendar of Events:

Saturday, April 21 - Habitat for Humanity in Ellis, Kansas
Transportation provided, but limited to the first 15 volunteers per shift who RSVP to Tigers in Service. Work to be completed at the job site in Ellis includes moving rocks and picking up other obstacles around the house. There are two shifts available: 9:30am and 1:00 pm. Meet in the Memorial Union West parking lot at 9:30am (work until the barbecue starts at noon) or at 1:00pm (return to Hays at 3:30pm).

Saturday, April 21 - Outdoor Classroom at Sternberg Museum
Meet in the Sternberg parking lot (3000 Sternberg Dr.) at 10:00am Please wear heavy duty boots, work gloves (we will have plastic gloves available), and bring bug spray. The area we will clean is to the northwest of the actual museum, and is the potential site of a future outdoor classroom to be used by FHSU students and students K-12 for educational purposes. All visible trash will be collected. Trash bags will be provided. If possible, please RSVP to Tigers in Service.

Saturday, April 21 - Barbecue for Volunteers
The Office of Student Affairs, PepsiCo, and McDonald's are sponsoring a barbecue at 12:00noon outside the Memorial Union Quad side for all volunteers who help participate in one of the National Youth Service Day activities. Hamburgers will be cooked by technology studies volunteers and chips, water, and pop will all be provided for volunteers. If possible, please RSVP to Tigers in Service.

Saturday, April 21 - Neighborhood, Big Creek, and Campus Clean-Up
Following the barbecue, at 1:00pm volunteers will be divided into groups and pick up trash in and around Big Creek, 5th, 6th and 7th street alleys, and campus. Trash bags and gloves will be provided. The Student Environmental Organization will be collecting recyclable items. If you plan to get in Big Creek please bring waders and/or boots. If possible, please RSVP to Tigers in Service.

Thursday, April 12 to Friday, May 12 - Pop-a-Top for Kids
The FHSU VISTA Program has partnered with a local elementary school in a service project for the Ronald McDonald House in Wichita.  Kindergarten classes will learn about what it means to volunteer, and what they can accomplish, by collecting pop tabs for a month and then sending the money from having them recycled to the Wichita RMH. The classes will get to have their group pictures taken to send with the money, and a treat that will be provided by the local McDonald's in Hays. McDonald's Owners and Operators of Kansas is a proud sponsor of FHSU's Kansas Youth Leadership Academy.

Lawrence Community Celebration

Calendar of Events:

Wednesday, April 18 and Sunday, April 22 - Wednesday's at Liberty Hall (W@LH)
This program for local middle school students takes place every Wednesday afternoon in the Lawrence Public School district.  Various community partners plan programming each week and it all happens in downtown Lawrence at Liberty Hall. In partnership with W@LH, the Center for Service-Learning of the University of Kansas has recruited student groups with a focus on the environment, sustainability, and green architecture to coordinate activities for the middle schoolers.  Some middle school students will also take a field-trip to work on a local community garden. Lunch will be provided.

Leavenworth Community Celebration

Thursday, April 19 and Sunday, April 22 - School Garden Planting
Leavenworth local elementary school students are joining with the Service-Learning Center of the University of Saint to plant school gardens. Through the week and on Earth Day, USM students will also be celebrating volunteerism by participating in campus-wide clean-up and planting of campus gardens.
