1) Senate Funding of the Corporation for National and Community Service

Tuesday, July 18th, the Senate Appropriations subcommittee with jurisdiction on national service held a markup to decide on funding levels to recommend for adoption in the full Senate. This bill addresses funding for the entire Corporation for National and Community Service, including the various AmeriCorps programs and Learn and Serve America.

The companion bill reported from the House Appropriations Committee last month included a 20% cut to both last year’s funding level for AmeriCorps State and National Grants as well as Learn and Serve America’s traditional funding level. If adopted, the cuts would seriously jeopardize the national service programs and their ability to sustain the progress they’ve made in recent years.

If you're willing and able, now is a great time to contact your representatives.  More information on the bills, and how to take action, can be found at www.compact.org/policy, and on Youth Service America's home page:   www.ysa.org.

2) Campus and Student Sustainability Achievement Awards

The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) is pleased to announce its first North American sustainability achievement awards, to be presented at AASHE 2006: "The Role of Higher Education in Creating a Sustainable World," which will be held at Arizona State University, Oct. 4-6.  (www.aashe.org/conference)

Campus Sustainability Achievement Awards will be given to institutions that have made the greatest overall commitment to sustainability in their category, as demonstrated in their governance, academics, operations, and community outreach. Any college or university in the US and Canada may apply - there is no requirement for membership in AASHE.  One award will be given in each of these categories:

1. Community colleges and other two-year institutions;
2. Four-year and graduate institutions under 1,000 student FTE
3. Four-year and graduate institutions with 1,001 - 10,000 student FTE
4. Four-year and graduate institutions over 10,000 student FTE

A Student Sustainability Achievement Award will be given to an undergraduate student from an AASHE member institution who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in promoting campus sustainability. The Award includes $750 in cash as well as free registration for the conference.  Any undergraduate student enrolled at an AASHE member institution in the U.S. or Canada who has played a leadership role in implementing campus sustainability is eligible for this award.

Applications for both awards are due by August 18, 2006.  For details please see http://www.aashe.org/conference/awards.php

3) Apply to be Lead Agency for National & Global Youth Service Day 2007

Looking for a way to increase participation in your programs while connecting with the larger youth service movement? Youth Service America has the perfect opportunity for you to do so; apply to be a Lead Agency for National & Global Youth Service Day 2007!  Lead Agencies are organizations across the United States that increase the scope, visibility, and sustainability of National & Global Youth Service Day by leading city, regional, or statewide service projects. Past Lead Agencies have been successful in garnering national media attention, developing new partnerships, and engaging elected and public officials in their service and service-learning projects.

Lead Agencies receive a $2,000 N & GYSD planning grant sponsored by State Farm Companies Foundation and direct assistance and support from Youth Service America to ensure a successful National & Global Youth Service Day.

To complete an application please visit http://www.ysa.org/nysd/nysd_leadagency.cfm. The application deadline is August 31, 2006. If you have any questions about the Lead Agency program or the application please contact Cassandra Miller, N & GYSD Field Manager at cmiller@ysa.org.

4) Red, White & Green Climate Change Grant

Youth Service America and the Civil Society Institute are excited to announce the Red, White & Green Climate Change Grant. This opportunity offers $500 to implement a service-learning project about climate change, and is open to all young people in the United States between the ages of 15-25 and to organizations that engage youth ages 15-25.

Applicants are expected to develop and implement a service-learning project about climate change that engages their community AND candidates running for election in November 2006. We welcome projects where youth work in partnership with adults (parents, coaches, teachers, youth leaders, etc.): but remember, this is an opportunity for youth to shine.  Projects should be youth-led, and the service must take place between October 1 and November 30, 2006.

Applicants need to download both the Red White and Green Climate Change Grant Application and the Red White and Green Climate Change Grant Guidelines and Resources document in order to submit a competitive application. We encourage you to review the Evaluation form before making your application, although only grantees will need to complete it after their projects take place.

Applications are accepted by airmail only.  Applications must be postmarked no later than Sept. 1, 2006. Youth Service America does not assume responsibility for delays, misrouting, or postal errors.

5) YouthRising Grant Opportunity from Youth Service America

Youth Service America and the United States Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention are pleased to announce the launch of the YouthRising grant program. This opportunity offers $2,000 for organizations to engage high risk and/or gang-involved youth in volunteer service. Eligible organizations must have documented success in prevention/intervention work with high risk and/or gang-involved youth.

The grant will support projects that engage high-risk and/or gang-involved youth (ages 12-25) in service to their communities. We seek projects that are co-led by youth and adult allies such as parents, counselors, coaches, teachers, youth leaders, etc. A significant portion of the project must take place on National & Global Youth Service Day, April 20-22, 2007.

YSA will accept proposals by mail, fax, or email. Materials must be received at YSA no later than 5pm EST on Thursday, October 12, 2006. Youth Service America does not assume responsibility for delays, misrouting, or postal errors. For a link: http://www.ysa.org/awards.

6) Community-Based Job-Training Grants for Community Colleges

The Community-Based Job Training Grants (CBJTGs) are designed to support workforce training for high-growth/high-demand industries through the national system of community and technical colleges. The primary purpose of these grants is to build the capacity of community colleges to train workers to develop the skills required to succeed in local or regional (i) industries and occupations that are expected to experience high-growth and (ii) industries where demand for qualified workers is outstripping the supply. ... The Employment and Training Administration intends to fund approximately seventy-five (75) grants ranging from $500,000 to $2 million through this competition; however, this does not preclude ETA from funding grants at either a lower or higher amount, or funding a smaller or larger number of projects, based on the type and the number of quality submissions. Applicants are encouraged to submit budgets for quality projects at whatever funding level is appropriate to their project. Nevertheless, applicants should recognize that the funds available through this SGA are intended to complement additional leveraged resources rather than be the sole source of funds for the proposal.

7) Raise Your Voice - Month of Action

Minigrants were available to KSCC member campuses to host Raise Your Voice activities during the Month of Action, February - March. Minigrant guidelines and application were developed by the student civic leadership retreat participants in late October, 2003.

We seek institutional partners to sponsor a local forum, dialogue or discussion with students and others about the politics of campus, the area, state or other public issues of general interest. Minigrant guidelines and application will be available in later in the year.
