AmeriCorps*Kansas
Campus-Community Youth Service Corps
What is AmeriCorps* Kansas?
AmeriCorps*State works with Governor-appointed State Service Commissions to provide grants to public and nonprofit
organizations that sponsor service programs around the country, including hundreds of faith-based and community organizations,
higher education institutions, and public agencies. Grants assist these groups in recruiting, training and placing AmeriCorps
members to meet critical community needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment.
The purpose of AmeriCorps*Kansas grants are to engage AmeriCorps members in direct service and capacity-building to address
unmet community needs. Local programs design service activities for a team of members serving full- or part-time for one year
or during the summer. Sample activities include tutoring and mentoring youth, assisting crime victims, building homes, and
restoring parks. AmeriCorps members also mobilize community volunteers and strengthen the capacity of the organizations where
they serve.
The organizations that receive grants are responsible for recruiting, selecting, and supervising AmeriCorps members to serve
in their programs.
What is the Campus-Community Youth Service Corps?
The Campus-Community Youth Service Corps (Cc Youth Service Corps) is funded through an AmeriCorps*Kansas grant and
designed to engage college students as AmeriCorps team members in a leadership/mentoring role with community-based
youth service groups. The program provides campuses the opportunity to intentionally link their students through service
to local communities.
What does the Cc Youth Service Corps do?
Kansas college students have an opportunity to participate in an AmeriCorps*Kansas program sponsored by Kansas Campus Compact. Students work with community youth to foster civic engagement and develop youth leadership skills through these national and local service opportunities.
The AmeriCorps team members coordinate service activities with local youth group leaders and meet regularly throughout
the academic year with youth to provide team-building, leadership skill development, and to assist in identifying, planning,
and implementing a community-wide service project.
Team members model and initiate commitment to civic participation, and provide relevant leadership development opportunities
for the youth. Service projects serve to empower youth, engage others, and meet a real community need while strengthen and
improving Kansas' communities in which they serve.
Campus-Community Youth Service AmeriCorps members have helped youth:

- Obtain and ship requested items for a military father and his unit stationed overseas.
- Raise $850 for special enrichment toys for zoo animals by collecting, separating and marking donated items for zoo’s annual garage sale.
- Coordinate a historic bike tour where service projects could be done as community volunteers stopped at various historic sites.
