2010 Member Engagement Profile
Highlights
2010 has been a great year for community service, service-learning, and civic engagement among Kansas Campus Compact member institutions. Overall, our students have combined to serve 2,798,505 hours of service, amounting to $58,348,834 in value to the entities served. Overall, our students gave back to their communities more than students at other state Campus Compacts nationwide. We exceeded the national average in many service categories, including agricultural issues, hunger, homelessness, mentoring, and senior/elder services. Our success is fueled in part by our dedication to supporting faculty, as 63 percent of our member institutions provide faculty development workshops/fellowships, 25 percent provide service-learning and community orientation in faculty orientation, and 75 percent encourage and support faculty financially to attend and present at service-learning related conferences. Overall, one hundred percent of our member institutions reported being very satisfied or satisfied with their Campus Compact membership. We are very pleased with all of our member institutions’ efforts and the value they bring to their communities and the state of Kansas as a whole.
Focus Areas
The largest and most consistent issue among Kansas Campus Compact member institutions is the need to better track student service hours. While the numbers in the paragraph above are impressive, they are small in comparison to what they could be, since they are not inclusive of many service projects. Development of an institution-wide system to track hours may better help students, faculty, and community members qualitatively record their efforts. Kansas Campus Compact member institutions also trailed the national average in alumni inclusion in community service/civic engagement activities. Better contact with alumni and/or increased efforts to involve them may enrich current community service and civic engagement initiatives by adding unique perspective and experience.
