Program Session I

10:00 a.m. - 10:50 a.m.

Title: Making the Election Matter to Students
Presenters: Brett Bruner & Whitney Swender – Fort Hays State University


Room: Ballroom B&C
    The presidential election is less than one month away! This session will highlight strategies for campuses to utilize to make the election matter to their students including voter registration, voter education, ballot access, and getting out the vote as well as the process FHSU has utilized through NASPA to receive a voter-friendsly campus designation.

 

Title: Assisting the Over-Parented Student Achieve Self Efficacy


Presenter: Alexandra Shaw - Fort Hays State University

This session discussion will utilize Julie Lythcott-Haims’s book How to Raise an Adult. Attendees will learn who characteristics manifest in students from over-parenting backgrounds and through discussion discover ways student affairs professions can encourage self-efficacy.

 

 

Title: A Cooperative Enterprise Across Campus Colleagues: Revising the Code of Student Rights & Responsibilities at KU
Presenters: Bill Larzalere & Lance Watson -
 University of Kansas

The program will include three perspectives on the revision of the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities at the University of Kansas. This presentation will consist of three short presentations (5 to 8 minutes each) followed by questions and discussion about the need for updating of the 1970 KU Code and the issues that were addressed. The presentations and discussion will not be from a legal perspective but from that of a cooperative endeavor to produce a Code that incorporates various perspectives of the individual within the 21st Century KU community.



Program Session II

Title: Roudtable Discussion
Presenters: Joseph Linn & Tammara Durham
Room: Tadtman Boardroom
    The purpose of this roundtable discussion is to hear from two Chief Student Affairs Officers on pressing issues in Student Affairs from a state, regional and national perspective. Audience participation is requested on topics of interest. Joseph Linn serves as the Vice President for Student Affairs at Fort Hays State University and Tammara Durham serves as the Vice Provost for Student Affairs at the University of Kansas.

 

Title: Comprehensive Prevention Programming Development & Implementation
Presenters: Jennifer Brockman & Dustin Struble - University of Kansas

     In January 2016, the Sexual Assault Prevention and Education Center (SAPEC) was established to provide comprehensive primary prevention education at the University of Kansas. One of the first efforts of SAPEC was to develop a collaborative partnership with the University’s athletic department. These efforts have resulted in a multi-faceted approach to educating student athletes, staff and coaches. This session will provide participates with actionable tools and implantation outlines for the cultivation of multi-session primary prevention programming within college athletic departments Including examples of tiered programming models for students and professional staff.

 

Title: A Generation of They
: Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity in the Workplace
Presenters: Ashley Motley & Dana Nordyke - Kansas State University

On Dec. 3, 2014 the U.S. Department of Labor prohibited Federal contractors from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. This interactive program explores the current climate of the workplace for LGBTQ+ students. Attendees will leave with tools to coach LGBTQ+ students during their career journey.

 


Session III

Title: Commuting to Success
Presenter: John Nicholson - Fort Hays State University

Commuter Students are a segment of college students who get left behind on many college campuses. To counteract this Fort Hays State University has created its Commuter Student Lounges Program. Assessment and Practical examples will be given to assist others in creating their own commuter centered program.

 

Title: What's Relevant Now: Topics in Student Conduct
Presenter: Lance Watson & Karie Stone-Sewalish – University of Kansas
Room: Ballroom B&C
     The landscape of higher education is ever-evolving based on topics and trends that influence our students, campus communities, and ultimately our daily work. Join us to discuss current hot topics on college campuses, including: mental health and students of concern, free speech and expression, and human and drug trafficking concerns. Join us to process, ask questions and connect.

  

Title: Engaging and Supporting Undergraduate Women
Presenters: Brie Jutte, Carly Corio & Ashley Dorsett - Kansas State University
Room: Tadtman Boardroom
     
Women are in the heart of it all and this presentation will show how we as professionals can push women to their full potential. Focusing on women’s career development from youth to adulthood, we will dive into the issue and incorporate women’s empowerment movements. This session will include discussions, a case study, and methods to use as a professional.

 


Session IV

2:30 p.m. - 3:20 p.m.

Title: Implementing Conduct Questions on the Application for Admissions: Doing your Admissions "Due Diligence"
Presenters: Molly McGaughey & Heather Reed - Kansas State University

This program will review the research and the decision making process K-State used to determine whether to add conduct questions to the application for admission.

 

Title: Learning Communities
: Integrating the Curricular and Co-Curricular Environments
Presenters: Maureen Duffy & John Gettemeyer
 - Fort Hays State University

Integrating the curriculum and co-curriculum to maximize the impact of Living Learning Communities can be a challenge for all members of the team, and in particular, faculty and staff who are new to the concept of Living Learning Communities. How do student affairs professionals enter into conversations with faculty who are experienced educators? How can Peer Academic Leaders (PALs) be a part of this process? How can student development theory be utilized to illuminate the creation of vibrant learning opportunities? Experiences and reflections on current practices as well as simple but effective strategies for creating co-curricular activities will be presented.

 

Title: Effectively Advocating for Free Speech and Civil Discourse
Presenter: Christy Moran Craft - Kansas State University

Serious challenges have been raised for student affairs professionals with regard to balancing students’ rights of free speech with campus goals related to civil discourse. The purpose of this discussion-oriented session is to share ideas about how to navigate situations involving a potential clash of these two values.
