Membership

Our chapters work hard to continually improve membership by forming relationships, increasing our visibility in the band program as a whole, and continually looking for avenues to serve.

All Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi members wear blue bandanas during band camp to set the chapter members apart and spark questions from non-members making our organizations more visible. KKY/TBS officers plan a barbecue for the incoming freshman members of marching band and section leaders as well as an all band barbecue increasing the visibility of our organizations even further. The first recruitment event is a low-key, informational, joint meeting providing free dinner after a marching band rehearsal. An announcement is made after rehearsal one week before this event as well as the day of. Active members are encouraged to pick out members of their instrumental sections and encourage them to attend more recruitment events. Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma active members agree to recruit for each other, as well, which reaches a larger group of people. Communication about recruitment events is done through verbal announcements at marching band rehearsals, individual reminders/invitations from active members, a schedule posted on the Kappa Kappa Psi/Tau Beta Sigma bulletin board, and fliers handed out.

Membership Education

The membership education process for the Epsilon Pi and Delta Kappa chapters is done during each weekend of October. There is a brief meeting with potential members (PMs) right after the first degree of initiation to discuss the membership education process and set the date of the first membership education class. The Vice President of Membership (VPM) distributes a sheet detailing expectations of PMs during the membership education process and expectations of active members. There are generally four to six classes and one service project, which is planned by the PMs. Each class is held in a room in the music building. Quizzes are administered for each class session. PMs must pass each quiz with at least 80% accuracy. Additionally, KKY PMs take a final at the end of the classes. If this is not attained, retakes are given. Additionally, the VPM creates membership handbooks for each PM including information for each class including the drug/substance and hazing policies, history, and other pertinent pages from the Guide to Membership Education available at kkytbs.org.
