The Kansas Geographic Alliance (KGA) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing geographic literacy among the citizens of Kansas. The KGA is funded by the National Geographic Education Foundation with additional support from Kansas State University, Fort Hays State University, and the State Department of Education.
Our mission is to improve, promote, and support the teaching of geography in K-12 classrooms throughout Kansas; public, parochial, and home schools are welcome.
While the KGA is primarily a professional development organization for educators, membership is open to individuals in government, business, and the general public.
Capacity Building: during 2010, the National Geographic Society has asked all of the state geographic alliances to begin the process of strategic planning, so that we can greatly improve the effectiveness of our efforts to advance K-12 geographic education.
History & Geography Workshops: the Kansas Geographic Alliance was very fortunate to obtain a modest amount of funding for 2010 for programs that support the teaching mission. We are in the process of identifying specific history standards and related content wherein the addition of maps and spatial reasoning will enhance student learning. We anticipate delivering the workshops in locations across the State of Kansas in the second half of 2010.
Leadership within the Kansas Geographic Alliance includes:
Dr.
John
Harrington, Jr., Coordinator
Dr.
Paul Phillips, Co-coordinator
Shannon
Woods, Public Engagement Coordinator
