Graduate Studies in Plant Ecological Genomics
Plant Ecological Genomics (PEG) provides a flexible and challenging area
of study. Graduate students admitted into the PEG Lab have
many study options and have power in designing their own research projects and engaging in interdisciplinary research in ecological genomics.
Prospective students, who wish to pursue a
M.S. or Ph.D. in the PEG should do the following:
Browse the PEG Website
Reading through the EEL publications and information presented in the
website will help you to determine if your area of interest would be suited
to the areas of research conducted in the lab, and if the EEL would provide
training in the field you desire.
Contact Dr. Loretta Johnson!
Full support for graduate students is provided by the Division of Biology at Kansas State University through teaching assistantships awarded by the Division or through research assistantships funded by grants awarded to Dr.
Johnson. Because these positions are awarded on a competitive basis, you should provide the following information in your letter of inquiry:
- Explain how your research interests are compatible with
PEG
- Outline any past research experience you may have
- State your professional or career goals (i.e., why do you want to pursue a M.S. or Ph.D.?)
- Submit a resume or curriculum vitae which highlights your major academic and research-related accomplishments (e.g., awards, fellowships, research grants, publications, presentations at professional meetings)
- Send copies of academic transcripts or provide a summary of GPA/GRE scores
- View tips for success in graduate school
Much of this information will ultimately be
required for admission into the graduate program, but it will also enable
Dr. Johnson to assess whether your interests are compatible with those of
the lab and whether the PEG in turn will be able to provide you with the
training you desire.

Plan a visit to the PEG and Kansas State
University.
If you are seriously considering pursuing your graduate studies in the PEG,
then a trip out to visit the lab and to tour the Kansas State University
campus is a good idea. This will enable you to meet with Dr. Johnson and
members of the PEG, interact with other faculty and graduate students in the
Ecological Genomics Institute, as well as tour the city of Manhattan (the "Little
Apple") and the surrounding Flint Hills area.
