Configuring Thunderbird 2.x for Windows

Configuring Thunderbird 2.0 for Windows

  1. On the File menu, point to New and then click Account Settings.
  2. On the New Account Setup page, click Email account and then click Next.
  3. In the Your Name box, type your name.
  4. In the Email Address box, type your K-State e-mail address and then click Next.
  5. Select either POP or IMAP as the incoming server and then follow the instructions below for the type of server you chose:
    • IMAP server: In the Incoming Mail Server box, type imap.k-state.edu.
    • POP server: In the Incoming Mail Server box, type pop.k-state.edu.

      Note: IMAP is the recommended incoming server type. See IMAP vs. POP.

  6. In the Outgoing Server box, type auth.smtp.k-state.edu and then click Next.
  7. In the Incoming User Name box, type your eID.
  8. In the Outgoing User Name box, type your eID and then click Next.
  9. In the Account Name box, type a name for your account and click Next.
  10. You will be presented with a summary of your account. Confirm everything is correct and then click Finish.
  11. Follow the instructions below to enable SSL or TLS and Authenticated SMTP.
Enabling SSL or TLS

In order to view your K-State e-mail using Thunderbird, you have to enable SSL or TLS.

  1. On the Tools menu, click Account Settings (if you are not already there).
  2. On the left, under your account, click Server Settings.
  3. Click either the SSL option or the TLS option.

  4. Follow the instructions below to enable Authenticated SMTP.

  1. On the Tools menu, click Account Settings (if you are not already there).
  2. On the left, below your account and Local Folders, click Outgoing Server (SMTP).
  3. Click the Edit button.
  4. Under Security and Authentication, click the Use name and password check box.

  5. In the User Name box, type your eID.
  6. Click the SSL option and then click OK.
  7. Click OK.

Using the Address Book

Importing an Address Book
  1. Click the Address Book button.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Import.
  3. Click Address Books and then click Next.
  4. Choose one of the following options for importing your address book:
Importing From an E-mail Client
  1. Select the e-mail client you want to import from and then click Next.

  2. Follow the wizard to finish the import process.
Importing From a Text File

Note: You need to use this option if you have exported your address book from another e-mail client.

  1. Click Text file and then click Next.
  2. In the Files of Type list, select the type of text file to be imported.

    Note: Comma separated values and Tab separated values are text files that are the most commonly used by most e-mail clients. Check which file types are supported by the programs you will be importing to.

  3. Browse to the file location, select the file and then click Open.
  4. Match the address book fields with the data being imported.
  5. Click OK.
Exporting an Address Book
  1. Click Address Book button.
  2. Click the Address Book you want to export.

  3. On the Tools menu, click Export.
  4. Browse to the saving location and then enter a file name in the File name box.
  5. In the Save as Type box, select the file format for the exported address book (ldif, .csv, .tab, or .txt).

    Note: Comma separated values and Tab separated values are text files that are the most commonly used by most e-mail clients. Check which file types are supported by the programs you will be importing to.

  6. Click Save.

Subscribing to Folders

If you have configured your e-mail client to use IMAP, folders are created and stored on the IMAP server. You can also create folders on your local machine if your client supports that feature. If you switch e-mail clients, your IMAP folders will still exist on the IMAP server, but you may not be able to view them.In order to access those folders in your new e-mail client, you must subscribe to those folder(s). To subscribe to your folders, do the following:

  1. On the File menu, click Subscribe.

    Note: The folders you are subscribed to will have a check mark following them. The folders you aren't subscribed to will have a small circle following them.

  2. Click the check box for each folder you want to subscribe to.

  3. Click OK.

Enabling Thunderbird's Spam Filter

  1. On the Tools Menu, click Junk Mail Controls.
  2. Click the Enable junk mail controls check box and then click OK.
